I found out tonight that my 69' has a 741 rearend 3rd member w/a 2.76 gear ratio. I have another 8 3/4 also that I may use vs. the won thats in it, w/a 742 case. Is the 741 better or equal to the 742 w/ 3.23 gears? I want the 2.76 gears for highway use. I plan to install 3.55 in the other rearend later on also.
Thanks for any advice.

Hey, you can hate the game but don't hate the player.

the 742 is "stronger" than the 741...     however...    my boss ran a 741 sure grip with 15" wide slicks behind a blown 440 / 4-speed combo with no problems...     the stregnth of the 741 is extremely underated...     nothing wrong with them in my eyes

:iagree: the only problem with the 741 case is the availability of gears and parts for them but other then that they are a good casing.

Since this is such an old topic I was just wondering if more gears are available for the 741 case?

in a nutshell.. nope.  there is variety, just not as much as what you will find for a 742 case or a 489 case.

Thanks a lot! What are the pros and cons between a 742 and a 489 case?  I'm planning on running a pretty steep set of gears in my Charger (which will have a 340 for the time being) somewhere around say 5.13s.

hope you dont want to drive it on the highway.

742 pros: no crush sleeve

489 pros: big pinion diameter

definitely not a highway driver, big heavy car, big hills, and tires begging to be shredded!!!!! :icon_smile_big:
