What 8-Track tapes do you have, and what is the player that plays them?

I was rummaging through my '73, and looked through the tapes I have. Not all are still good, but It got me to thinking about the variety of music/artists we listened to back in the day. Lets see your collection and the player you use (in your car, that is! ). I'll start.

Wow, I remember those days.  My friend had a portable 8trk player and we used to listen to AC/DC all the time.

Too many 8-Tracks to list.  Have an AM/FM/8-Track unit out of a Land Rover that a electronic tech friend rebuilt for me.  Still need to find a home for it in the '74.  At home I use a Technics by Panasonic 4-channel unit.

I was born in late 60s, so 8 tracks to me are a fond childhood memory- the first record I bought actually was a record, and then a year or two latter I was buying cassettes.  I started buying CDs for home use in the early 90s, but had a cassette in the car until 2004.  I still have not fully converted from CD to IPOD. My wife says I am one percent, maybe two there!

For me cruising in a well running 69 and putting in an 8 track is like a trip back to fried dough at the fair, catching fireflys, and sneaking reading comics under the covers with a flashlight when you are supposed to be asleep.  Pure unadulterated joy of child hood- only now I am the driver.

(On the other hand, cruising in a barely running fifteen year old 69 and putting a cassette into a mauled dash with a K-Mart barely audible Krapco with speaker wires and jagged wholes on the rear tray would be like a trip back to cheap beer kept cold hidden in the brook near the fair, getting speeding tickets, and sneaking to your girlfriends when you are suppossed to be asleep,  pure unadulterated replay of high school for me.)

Just an aftermarket underdash player, to the factory underdash speaker (that I upgraded to a pair of speakers!)
Forgive me, its a 69 GTO.
I have not found the right vintage Charger yet,
and my new MOPAR is a Challenger because when all is said and done size and weight and 5 sets of buckles wise in my opinion its closer to what the Chargers were in function even though looks based on the Challenger.  Its closer by far in my opinion to the old Charger than the four door ones.
But cruising in vintage muscle is cruising in vintage muscle

I have the factory AM radio in the dash, so I also have an FM tuner cartridge that goes into the 8 track.  you plug the antenna cable into the side of it.  works ok.

I have been losing so many 8 tracks to various causes, I also took and ipod to cassette adapter and used it to make an 8 track to cassette adapter.
works fine, but its only mono.  I need to try a stereo version.

Dont hate me for that- I love my 8 tracks,
but I have spent a lot of time keeping some of them running and its only a matter of time.

devilgear

I still have all my 8 tracks. 90% are KISS with a few Black Sabbath tossed in too...

The70RT

A good tip is to retape the factory splices on the tapes. As old as thet are now they seem to break in that area consistantly if used for any period of time. I recently had to tear down an nos player I was using to dislodge some tape.  :brickwall: I bet I have over a hundered of those oldies.

I threw all mine out except for a Pat Benatar tape she signed back in 1980.

Last car with an 8 track was my 76 Grand Prix SJ which got wrecked in '83.
The home 8 track went out during a move around '90.

I bought a box full at a flea market last year for $30.

I punched 'em all into a spreadsheet to keep track of what I had. Here's a text export of the list. Duplicate entries means that I have more than one copy.

I've since acquired a couple more, but haven't updated the list.

Dad has an original 8 track player in the Lil Red Express.  He has some Oldies tape in there now. I remember listening to an 8 track of "Convoy" over and over when I was a kid.

There was one in my Trans Am when I got it too but I took it out to put in an cassette deck and equilizer way way back.(now that stuff is beyond obsolete too.  :-\)

I have too many 8-tracks to list. Most are rock and roll. Here is what I can play them on. I have one in the car bu it ate one last time. The tape separated at the splice and some got caught in the player. I need to take it out and work on it but it is a pain to get out. I have a NOS Clarion AM/FM one that I never used. I also have a couple of old player for inside that are like mint and play great. I also got a few old ones for cars that I removed over the years. I will get the tapes out someday and reminisce  :icon_smile_wink:

Never had an 8-track in the car. I would like to find an under dash unit tho. I did have a big RCA stereo system a few years back with the turn table, 8-track, etc. I sold it and have sold off all but one of my tapes. I had a few Kiss, Sabbath, Judas Priest and Nugent tapes. I still have a Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes tape stuck back in my collection of music stuff.

LOL, only someone who truly grew up with 8 tracks would remember the matchbook trick.

dodgecharger-fan

My wife rides in the passenger seat and holds the tape in.....

but, yeah, shimming is required.

I reluctant to run any tapes through it anymore because it seems like it wants to rip the tape when the channel changes.
It ate the last two tapes I put in it. I'm just not sure if it's the tapes or the player that's causing this.

Ghoste

I think it's the tapes.  There is a splice in the tape under that little bit of foil that triggers the channel change and I think over time the adhesive holding the foil tape over the splice just gives up.

When we bought our 69 it came with an aftermarket FM/8 track player. The usual kind that mounts under the dash and it works just fine. Of course I pulled it outta the car for the resto and went with a SecretAudio system. Now it's just taking up space in a garage cabinet.

I have some of those as well. That Tubes "What do you want from Live" is great. I play them in the garage in one of those combo record/radio/cassette/8-track units.

Apparently, Columbia House offered 8 tracks long after they disappeared in stores. My buddy was ordering them into the early eighties. He had a couple Van Halen albums on 8 track and I would've sworn that was long after the 8 track went the way of the buggy whip.
