This particular piece of trim is a mystery to me

This corner piece I don't get. Pretty much every 2nd gen I see has the back quarter window trim sticking out from the body, and it looks to me like water could just run down past the end of the drip rail, between the trim and the body and then down inside the trunk and/or quarter panel. Why doesn't the drip rail itself extend down to the bottom of the corner? What am I missing? Also, does the back corner of the trim attach to the body somehow or not? I see what looks like a rivet on the outside and a hole in the inside so is there a fastener that holds it in place?

I think my 70 is the same way...and yea, I also remember a rivet attaching it to the body...

I don't think the rivet even serves a purpose as a fastener.   :shruggy:

:yesnod:

The rivet does nothing other than fill the hole in the trim.......must be something to do with its manu process.

There doesn't seem to be anything but questions in that thread too. :shruggy: So does anyone know what's supposed to go in that gap? Or does it get left open? I don't think I'll be leaving mine open because I really don't need water running down the inside of my quarters if I can help it. No wonder they're all rusted out.

Troy

It's left open at the back. I believe the trim is sealed to the drip rail and there's at least one other seal (maybe two) between the trim and the car. Those drain holes along the bottom of the car and doors allow water to escape - unless they are plugged like most.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

I know I was the first person to remove mine and ugh...the metal is like swiss cheese under there running forward! The factory never painted the inside of the lip and what a mess. Yes it drains but after I weld in replacements it will all be prepped sealed painted and bedded with something!  :eek2:

The factory fixed drainage rust problems when they got bad enough to make the first owner (it averaged 3-4 years from purchase) complain.  Not before.

Mine is the same way....but judging by that photo....yours sticks out way further than mine!!!

bull

And it won't go in any further because as you can see the corner piece is right up against the drip rail. I'm starting to devise a piece of stainless flashing in my mind...
