OK you mopar guys got a question for you i have a Dana 60 with posi and i want to put a spooler in it.  The only spoolers i can find are for 30 or 35 spline axles.  My axles are 24 spline,  does this make any sense to anybody or is my axle hacked together.  The number on the posi unit is 25124x.

Troy

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Old mopar passenger car Dana 60's had smaller spline count on the axles. Nothing strange there. Why not run what ya got? You can buy after market axles to fit what you have. You can change the guts and buy new axles with the larger spline counts if need be.  :Twocents: Kyle

Hi, first time poster.
To continue Jason's saga, we found the following numbers.
01279B stamped on the rear cover seal surface.
C34155 cast on rear housing about 2 o'clock
121966B on the posi unit.
25124X on the posi unit.
C30257 on the bearing caps.
Axles measure 29" driver's side.
27 5/8" passenger side.
1 1/2" diameter.
Could not read "60" cast into housing about 5 o'clock.
Do these numbers confirm it to be a Dana 60?
We are going to the pull-a-part Sunday to look for the 30 or 35 spline axles.
Aftermarket are pretty expensive.
thanks,
David aka Jason's dad.

May I ask why I spool in the first place?  Also, if you are going to spool it I would think up grading the axels shafts might be a good idea?

I am sure you know street manners of a spool are not good.

Tom,
thanks for the reply.
my son's car is not street driven.
we are looking into the spooler because we think his posi may be failing.
the rear of the car launches to the right.
goes 10.70's in the 1/4.
we adjusted his suspension last night, more preload on passenger side, and if it doesn't rain we will find out tonight.

K, Then yes spool away, would be best.

Saga part deux...
Well, we can't read the BOM on the rear end housing. :'(
I also found out we measured the axles wrong.
We measured from the back of the WMS not the front.
Anyone know where we should look for an axle number?
Is it stamped on the axles somewhere?
Then maybe we can determine what vehicle matches this rear so we could locate some 30 or 35 spline axles.
thanks,
david

Update,
we pulled the driver's side axle and could not find any numbers on it.
but it is 23 splines.
The rear measures 59 1/2 from outside drum to drum.
does this help in identifying it?
thanks,
david

There should be a 7-digit number stamped into one of the axle tubes.

Drain plug on the side or bottom or both?

How about a picture?

David, your best bet is to go with a set of aftermarket 35 spline axles when upgrading to a spool. This will save you a lot of grief in the long run....stock axles and spools don't mix. The last thing you want is to break an axle and send the car into the wall or opposite lane.

Most tracks that tech properly won't allow stock axles with a spool anyway. Strange has a nice street/strip 35 spline axle that won't break the bank. I have them in my D60 with a set of green bearings.

We wire wheeled both tubes and numbers could not be read.
Drain plug is on the bottom.
thanks for the reply.

Ron,
thanks for the reply.
I'll check into Strange.

My memory is poor on this, but I think bottom plug makes it a 68 B-body rear.

I cannot help on the race end of things, sorry, I'm more of a resto guy.

Quapman,
thanks for the reply.

Since it takes two weeks to order axles, we opted to rebuild the posi.
We jacked up the right rear wheel and could turn it by hand with not too much difficulty.
Bought a rebuild kit and got the kit for a traction-lock, not the power-lock, that we have.
Hope the part supplier let's me return it.
The parts house is closed for vacation for a week and we have a 3 day race this weekend.
When we took the 8 bolts out of the diff, the housing it just sat there and we seperated the two halves.
Soooo, we repositioned the steel clutch pack in the diff and when we went to bolt the halves together it was apart. As we tightened the bolts it pulled the halves together and evidently put pressure on the clutch pack. now we cannot turn the wheel by hand.
Hope it makes it thru the weekend. ;)

Sounds like you guys did a good job.  :2thumbs: Don't forget to add the friction modifier with the gear lube and do some figure 8's in a parking lot to loosen up the Suregrip.  :yesnod:

Great looking Goat....I'm a closet Poncho luver.  ;)

Ron,
thanks for the reply.
The car is really a T37. previous owner hung the goat front end on it.

Update...
Jason took it out on the road this morning and it seems the posi is working OK.
We'll find out tomorrow nite at the track.

One more thing...
Jason found a site that said our axles seem to come from a rear that has 6012957-5 -6 BOM numbers.
This is for the 23 spline count.
for the 35 spline count they would have come from a 603109-3-5-6-7-8 BOM's.
anybody have any more info with these numbers?

we are assuming these are BOM numbers.
thanks,
david
