My dad and I are beginning the restoration on his 1972 Road Runner. It's a #'s 400, 727, N96 code car.

We are trying to find out what wheels came factory on the car, and we have the fender tag in perfect shape, but none of the codes are related to the wheels. So the car came with whatever were standard wheels for a 72 RR since there is no option listed in the fender tag.

One of my questions is what wheels came standard on the 72 RR? Steel wheels with dog dishes, Magnum 500's, Rally's? We're not sure, it had slots on it when we got it.

My other question was how rare is the N96 option on '72 model Mopars? I heard that not very many were built with that option but I have no clue as to how rare "not many" really means. It looks like an earlier built car based off the VIN, 40,000 or so.

Thanks

Wheel options are not listed on the fendertag so there's no way to know what it came with unless you find the broadcast sheet. Steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps would be standard.

That does seem odd....

if 71-74 is 4th generation
68-70 would be third
66-67 would be second
leaving 62-65 first.  :shruggy:

no such thing

and

70 had different body panels so it should be a different generation, if all they changed was front/rear trim then it would be the same generation

It doesn't say RR's...it says B-Bodies. Therefore, you have to account for the 62-67 cars.

Great car to restore Sublime69,I love that body style in 71,72!!!!!!Even better w/N96!!!!! As far as the research I did, they are rare, but the rarest of the bunch (72)are 340 N96 cars for some reason.Back around Jan,Feb this year I started searching high and low for 71,72 RR-GTX and after multiple interest in many and going to view in person about 6 or 7,there was one that I almost  brought home,a 72 340,4speed,red,N96 car.Drove 2 hours to go see it,inspected it ,drove it,and bs'd with the guy for nearly 3 hours, asked him what he had to get for it,in which he replied between "x and y", he says make me an offer and you can buy it out of ebay,I really wanted the car so offered him the "y" figuring he would shake my hand and do the exchange. It was on ebay at the time ,he then tells me I'll have to consider it!! WHAT?????I just told you your high number, and you won't take it??He then lets the auction go,has a couple fake bids put on to raise it up,auction ends,I don't bid at all, immediately calls me to offer it to me at the ending price.I reply, what about the first, second, and third high bids?????????Well,he says, one is a dealer and I don't want to sell to a dealer, and you did show interest in it.So I again gave him my same number from that day,and doesn't take it,so told him to keep it or sell to the other three.Still has it today!!!!!!!I felt the car had to many iffy spots and and at my price offer I would'nt feel good paying any more. This was a reminder how hard it is to find that "right one"when you are musclecar shopping. After that interaction,I went the opposite way and wanting a new Challenger at a later time, pulled the trigger and bought one now.Brand new, just wash ,wax, change oil,and go.The 71,72 RR-GTX is till on my "to get list" someday.
Keep us updated with the following of the resto, good luck and have fun!!!!!

Thanks for the help and comments. I never knew wheels weren't listed on the fender tag.

There were peices of the build sheet left, but nothing you could make out, mice got in it.

He wants to put on the steel wheels or the magnum 500's. Thought about calling the guy we bought it from and asking him, the problem with that is we bought this car and my Charger 10 years ago and just now started on it.

69our/tea, that sucks, sounds like a classic problem with buying these cars after your lucky enough to find one. I can't tell you how many cars I tried to buy around here: '69 N96 Super Bee, '70 GTX, '70 FM3 Duster, (3) '73 318 Barracudas, and the list goes on. What happens EVERY time, I go back and the car is gone. Go figure.

It will take a while to do this car because my dad wants to put it back completely original. He's going tommorrow to pick up a rotiserie, Auto Twirler ?, so we can do this car a little better. And I'll stop by after work and probably help him some more stripping the car.

Hi, I used to have a 72 400 4speed road runner back in the mid 80's and it was a fun car to drive. I am not sure on the rarity of the N96 but would have to believe that there aren't a ton of them out there. I wanted to mention on the wheels/tires is there still the tire size grease pencil markings inside the deck-lid. If so that would at least narrow it down to a wheel size. Good luck, that will be a noce cruiser when done.

A/C and power windows, right?

That car has been for sale a LONG time. I contacted the seller on it almost two years ago, and he was stuck on his price. It has dropped quite a bit since then.
