heat in my garage.

So I had this problem.  a utility room in my house that's not on an outside wall that has burner, washer/dryer, and hot water heater in it.  This room gets way too hot, 90+ degrees year round.  This means that the burner is not getting enough fresh air and that's no good for combustion which could easily = carbon monoxide poisoning.

This room, however, borders my unheated garage.  A garage with a refrigerator in it.  the freezeer will not work in the winter when the temp gets too low.

So, I opened up the top of one wall in the utility room for fresh air feed, and installed one of those temp controlled attic fans in the opposite wall.  now it blows nice hot air into the garage and keeps the utility room at whatever temp I choose.  woke up this morning to 30 degrees outside and garage was at least 65.  utility room was at 78 (wife likes to dry clothes in there)  That's with one wall of garage still uninsulated.  I will do that today.

Just something to think about for anyone else in the same situation.  I got the idea from working with an electrician a few winters ago.  we were wiring a workshop in a garage that had no actual heating vents or baseboards.  all that was in there was the oil burner.  that garage was nice and toasty, even on 20 degree days.

of course, I have carbon monoxide detectors in the room above it and the one next to it just in case.  Just so you know, the burner does exhaust to the outside via a power vent and 4" B vent.  The heat that's in there is created by the little bit that escapes the chamber and the copper pipe that feeds all the baseboard.

I was ready to install baseboard heat in that garage and I would have done it myself, still would have cost me a couple of hundred easy.  got the fan and I installed it myself. only cost $52.  it's big enough to evacuate hot air from a 1600 sq foot attic, so has no trouble with my 12x8 utility room.

just insulated it and now it's real toasty!!!  time for the winter wrenching to begin

also, when in need of something to cover the insulation with, and you don't want to sheetrock it, manufacturers vinyl signs work very well.  the kind you see in the pits at races.

I have K&N, prestone, and demon giant posters.  they keep the fiberglass off me and look very "garage"
