I followed Ron's advice and picked up a pair of MT drag radials 275/60/15s on Cragar "Soft 8" 15x8 wheels. I had them filled with nitrogen and slapped them on this morning. They kick ASS! Normally, I drive around with Goodyear Eagle GT IIs. I swear I can barely tell the difference...well except for the huge billows of white smoke which are easier to create.

Anyway, the best part was seeing a late 60s maroon Chevelle SS in the distance. I chased him down and we raced into a town where we had to slow down. He did a burn out to the left and me straight ahead (had to get gas), right in the middle of the town. He came by later to the gas station. He was running a 350 strroked to a 383. If we hadn't have hit a town I would have taken him with the 512. I was doing 120 when I caught up to the guy.

Now I just have to make it over to the track, but they only have a test n' tune on Fridays.

Smoke is easier to create with the drag radials?  How come?  Aren't they supposed to be stickier?  Bob

If not easier then at least I'm not wearing my tread off...

Bob, it depends on how much tire pressure he's running....inflated to normal street pressures the DR's can still be smoked with 600+ ftlbs of torque.  :yesnod:

Where the MT DR's shine is at the track. With 20psi and a healthy burnout on a well prepped track they will hook like a slick. The stiff sidewall works great with heavier cars as well.

Looking forward to your track report John.....just heat em up real good and drop the pressure to 20psi and hold on !  :icon_smile_big:

Because I had them filled with nitrogen I fllled them to  the max for now. There was no problem doing a huge bunout. 22 psi is quite a bit below that. Obviously, I can't drive them an hour to the track like that. If I want to keep using nitrogen, I guess I'll have to find a supplier that sells small bottles... or else use the foot pump.

Why not? I drive around with my drag radials at 18psi exclusively on the street.  At first I was hesitant but I have never had a problem in 5 years+ and thousands of miles.  Burnouts are going to kill those tires way faster than you think, trust me :icon_smile_big:

How do I know when the tires are toast? The treads don't run deep anyway. The old penny trick?

When I see cords is when I replace mine, they get good when all the tread is gone.  If there anything like the BFG drag radials your not going to get much mileage at all out of them if you replace them when the tread is gone.  You cannot look at them like a regular radial tire.

bull

Every time I see a muscle car getting ready to do a drag race they seem to be able to do a right fine smokeshow. :nana:
