I hate chrome...

I may be getting ahead of myself since I am going to go today and pick up my 68 charger project, but I cant stop thinking about it. Anyway, I hate chrome and the car has a generous amount of chrome trim around it that I dont want to have on there. Id like to do something to tint it out in some way, make it look darker, less shiny, sort of like an aluminum wheel covered in brake dust if that helps. Does anyone know of a way I can do that? Or do I even have to put all that chrome trim back on it? Obviously the biggest parts will be the bumpers. I dont want them painted or power coated just a solid black and I dont think a paint or coat could get me the result I want. Im thinking maybe something like a spray on clear coat that will will just tint it all out.

Back N Black

Its the chrome and stainless steel trim that seperates these cars from the rest of the modern day cars. I think painted bumpers and chrome makes the car look cheap.thats just my  :Twocents:

I don't care for the painted bumper look myself on 2nd gens but to each their own.

No, not all the trim has to go back on it.   Driprails can be shaved ala Mr. Angry and Autodynamics.  Stainless trim can be removed also but I think some of it is necessary,   but you can color it to your liking I suppose.

Visit your local powdercoater to see what they have.   There's many shades and effects they can pull off.

If you have lots of money to spend,  feel free to send all your chrome out and have it black chromed.  But I heard that's even more expensive than regular chrome.

Since it's a project you have lots of time to think about it.

If it's all good chrome, you need to just box it up and send it to me. Then you can fill in the holes and paint to your hearts content.  :2thumbs:

You should probably stay away from 1st gens if you don't like bright trimwork.  ;)

Me, I like it but everyone is different.  I would also suggest that if you do want to get rid of it, you should remove it and keep it safe somewhere in case you get tired of the Buick Grand National look or in the event you decide to sell.

I have to agree with the others about keeping the chrome & stainless on the 2nd generation Chargers, it looks better that way. The trim either highlights, or separates a lot of the body lines for a nice contrast. Some of it will look okay left off the car, like the rocker panels. Coloring the stainless around the windows black may look decent, but I doubt it will hold up. One alternative for the bumpers & wheels that I plan to do to one of my own cars is called black chrome. It's not actually black, but it has a darker, smoked look to it.

This is the best comparison photo I could find for black chrome & standard chrome.

I agree on the not holding up part too.  Look at all those cars since the GN after blackout trim became all the rage.  They all get sun fade and turn that orange tinged hue.

 :2thumbs:to chrome...

This Charger right here is a one of none, that means none before it, none to come.

I'm not a huge fan of all the chrome and polished stainless either. I was thinking of maybe someday painting bigred a flat black and powder coating all the "brightwork" gloss black. So much so that I asked VERY politley, our resident photoshop guru to make a couple of renderings for me. (With chrome, with chrome blacked out, etc.) I gotta say I'm still sorta torn, I guess I'm glad I don't have the money to do anything right now!! Take your time, think about how you would like your car to look, maybe get some ideas from the 161 pages of Charger pictures in the picture thread, and go for it!!! :2thumbs:

To each his own! Burn all that chrome with acid...hit it with etching primer and paint it. Kind of a BATCharger!

i like painted bumpers but the only reson why i did is cause im on a tight budget, they were rusted and i cant afford new ones. Im a little younger then most people that spend time restoring a mopar and im workin with 8.25 an hour  ;) but u know it doesnt look to bad heres a pic

That is exactly what I am looking for, Thanks! BTW, this is all for my '68. Im thinking of painting it orange with a black hood and some small pin stripes down the sides following the body line

at last yrs' jimmy's picnic/bar b-que, there was this SWEEEEEET '56 Chevy that was a satin black, not primer, and all the chrome on the car was scuffed and buffed a grayish silver color kinda' like a pewter, that car got more attention then any other car, i think i took a couple pics, but they're on a memory stick, one of four, I'll try to find to show you, it was really nice and the first time i had ever see that done to a car...

After searching on line a lot over the last few days, I think I may have a solution. I read about some guys using a clear coat darkened with some black paint. I think Ill have to give that a try. I figure Ill hit the chrome with some steel woll, use some surface prep on it then spray it and see what I get. Ill have to measure out the clear precisely and use maybe a 10cc syringe to acurately add in the black. Ill go to a local junk yard and find something chrome and start experimenting
