Whats your meaning?
What sounds better ? Hemi or Big Block ?

What sounds better?  If you mean it literally, I like the sound of a Hemi.  If you mean it the way you think I do and this is for a street driven car, the 440 is the much better choice for most people as it is much easier to keep running well.

PocketThunder

doesnt it matter more which type of mufflers you use?

The Hemi's had their own sound though.  I don't know how to describe it, it's just different.

Jack, if you have to ask, then you aren't ready for a Hemi.  :nono:

Is it correct that the "exhaust notes" come from the pop of the fuel mixture igniting and bursting into flames.  Would then the HEMI have a different tone all its own of these notes due to the different combustion chamber area?  The pop is bouncing off of a hemispherical surface instead of a flat surface?

The mechanical part of it, I don't know- solid lifters, giant rocker arms, the airflow difference at the higher rpm it needs to sing, dual carbs sucking air, different exhaust manifolds?  I'm not saying you could play me a clip and I'd identify it, I'm just saying if you heard the two go by IMO one sounds much different.

:scratchchin:  It's depending upon the purpose of the Charger because it makes a difference, both in servicability and cost...
If cost is no object then a HEMI is prefered, But, Hemis do cost significantly more then a comparable 440,..
440s are somewhat easier to maintain with parts far more Avail. There are different flavors of 440 too single four Bll. "MAGNUM" and the tripple carberated SIX-PACK. Which BTW: was introduced to provide a more economical alturnitive to the expensive and Rare HEMI. in 1969 1/2.
Powerwise?.. a HEMI will make more power higher in the Rev band but it'll take a moment longer to get there. Do you intend to race it in the quarter mile?.. Hemis need to be tuned correctly which is important or they wont make the advertised speed and power they are capable of.
a 440 SIX-Pack will match a HEMI right up to about 100+ MPH but north of that a HEMI will continue pulling,.. Under 100 MPH a 440 will often beat a Hemi... how often are you going north of 100?..
Show Car?.. eveyone ohhhs and ahhhs a HEMI but a nice Six-Pack 440 gets much respect - make no doubt...
The Hemi sound has often been discribed as a coffee can full of rocks,.. But a 440 with a decent exhaust system will but the fear of God into animals, children and children with imports.
So what Car? and what's it gonna be used for?..

Hemis sound so different that if you know what to listen for you can tell a Hemi a mile away....don't know why, just know it's true. NOTHING sounds like a Hemi...... :D

I've just read that on more then a few occasions...
too me a HEMI sounds like your tryin to collect phlem in your throat over and over quickly...  :icon_smile_wink:

440 six pack is my vote. Though I love to look at a hemi, and ohh and ahh over it. The 440 is far easier to maintain and run on the open street. and my 440, with the Flowmaster 40's, does scare kids, set off alarms, and makes the Animals run in the opposite direction :D

Flame away.

Actually I believe Bobby Issac said it in the 1970 Scat Pack ad.  Or at least they quoted him as saying it.  ;)

While I love a HEMI for the sake of it.... they are a motor like likes forced induction......to really RUN..... that does not mean its a must.

Peronally a daily driver build a 440 stroker.... and you will have all the fun and horses you want.

NOW you want the WOW factor get a HEMI......

Ghoste

I'd argue that they are an engine which responds much better than others to forced induction as opposed to saying they need it.  The 68 Hemi Super Stocks seem to do okay without blowers. :icon_smile_wink:
