english wheels can hurt. they bite pretty good.

honestly the best deal for an amatuer right now is the Harbor Freight english wheel kit. you can get it completely set up with the extra anvils for around 400-450 bucks. The only reason to spend more on one is if you use it constantly or have too much money and need something to spend it on. If it is the later of the two, you can always PM me and I can put you in touch with the "Charger repair fund" group which would be a better way to throw money away.

I have one of the harbor freight wheels, and it works just fine. sometimes I need to run over the parts with the plenishing hammer because the anvils arent perfect, but for the price difference I can deal with that.

Harbour freight....sounds interesting. I'll look that up.
I need an English wheel to finish my Deora replica, but I don't feel inclined to spend 2-3K just for that.

Yes, it all sounds good.
I like to build my own shop tools. Call it a quirk.
For those of you who might remember, I built my rotisserie several years ago and posted the plans right here on this site.
I also built my own jackstands, and garage for that matter. So I'm thinking buying the anvils and wheel, then making the frame will probably be the way to go.
I'm also thinking I'd like to build a raised platform, with a 1/2" steel deck, as a table for building some of my future rides. There's nothing quite as luxurious as working with your arms extended right in front of you, verses laying on your back on cold concrete. Or listening to your knees groaning every time you get up.

start with that one and build on to it .  The guy in northern minnesota has over 100 different wheels and fixtures he has made him self for his .  He can make anything now from scratch .

That was all in with wheel and bits (not a large one though, but big enough to make patch panels

(had to have an "English Wheel" somewhere in my garage, what with all these Americal wheels parked aroung the place..lol)
