So I have been thinking about doing this for 2 years now, i have a 4speed out of a 71 road runner sitting in the shop and my 904 tranny is getting worse and worse. Would it be worth it to try and do the swap or would i be better off just rebuilding a 727 and putting it in? Ive heard the swap isnt to hard if you run an hydraulic throw out bearing but i am not sure. The car is a 74 charger SE that in the next couple years i am planning on doing a small block stroker motor for and i am getting alittle tired of dealing with auto trannys

The swap isn't hard, the trick is getting all of the parts.  If you have the trans and you want a four speed then I'd say go for it.

Well would it be worth running a hydraulic clutch or should i try and find all the mechanical linkage?

I had a guy tell me once he spent 2 grand on just getting the parts together all the linkage, trans tunnel and random stuff not even including the clutch and tranny.

That sounds kind of high to me but who am I to say.  I guess for me personally I'd go for the mecahnical clutch because it's what I'm familiar with.  I like the feel of the mechanical one better too.

This is doable but...don't forget the drive shaft length may have to change.  And the drive shaft pinion may be different.

I vote for using the 4 speed. Alot of the parts can be bought used on Ebay. There are also a few websites that sell the parts you'll need. Brewers performance is one of my favorites.

i spent about 2k by the time i had my 68 converted. i had the scatter shield but no tranny to start with.   i think the price beween a hydrolic set up and a mechanical set up will be about the same. its crazy how fast parts start to add up. i bought the tranny for about 200 bucksplus shipping and thought i had the bulk of the money spent, boy was i wrong.   i will say that it is hands down the best money ive ever spent on a upgrade on a car. 4 speed muscle cars just rock!   if i could afford it everyone of our cars would have a clutch pedal.
