Looks like about $5000 worth of sheetmetal and a couple rolls of welding wire and a shitload of grinding discs will get you close to primer... :Twocents:

I have always wanted a 2nd gen Charger let alone a 68 and have been looking for about 10 years.  I think that I would have taken a 6cyl, 318 or no motor if it was the right price.  I have not found one that has fit into my budget yet but I will keep looking.  I know for you this car is too far gone and that is alright if you part it out because you are right it is better that it lives on than be crushed for sure.  But I know for me and most likely other people as well its not always about the investment or what you might get if you were to sell it when you had all of the work done.

I happend to be at an auction about 8 years ago and found my 74 charger there.  I got what I thought was a steal on it.  I drove the car over 300 miles home and it didn't over heat or break down at all.  I took it over to a friend if mine that owned a body shop and did really good work.  He laughed at me and my new purchase.  It was badly rusted around the rear wheel wells to the point that the last owner took some pliers and peeled back the metal so that the sharp rusty spots would not cut the tires.  The interior looked bad and smelled worse but she ran and it was a charger.  Over the last 8 years I have put new fenders, rear quarters, wheel wells, trunk extentions, new paint, drivers side floor, new interior, rear bumper, rear tail lights, and a whole bunch more in and I did most of the work myself but the paint into the car.  I really have not spent that much on the car because I have been thrifty and taken my time.

I say all of that because some of us just wish we had a chance at a car like that once in our life time.  I will never be able to afford a Hemi or even an R/T so I do what I can with what I've got.  For you its ok to just part it out and good for you, you got a deal and are able to make some money.  It just doesn't always have to be about how much can I make, this is a good investment, or its only a 318.  I have a 1974 318 Charger that by all means should have been junked or parted out but I look forward to working on her when I get an extra $100 bucks not to sell but to drive and have some fun with and maybe even infect someone else to go out and find another junker to get on the road.  Lets be honest with all of this green stuff going on in washington who knows how much longer we will get to drive these old cars before the Green Nazi's come and take them away too.

Wow that was kinda long :scratchchin:

Good points. I think more cars (30 years and older) are now being saved these days, because we all abused them and sent them to the scapper back in the days.  :Twocents:
Keep saving the ones you can.

Damn dude, that is a beautiful find...
hopefully you can save it.  If not, let the parts go to good homes!

Guy's you can't fix'em all.  :'( We got the trunk open yesterday, just full of crap (and NOT Charger crap)! Cut the chain on the hood, she's got a 340 with M/T covers and an edlebrock manifold, no carb tho. But who ever took the carb off did tape over the intake. I most likely will not be able to dig through the interior till next week. I'll probly need a dumpster!

I'd be interested in those valve covers and the intake if you're sellin em cheap.

That is totally restorable...$400 for the rear quarters, $300 for the rockers, $300 for the front and rear valance,$2-400 for a hood, $400 for the floors. Sand it all down, maybe throw down some plastic where needed and fix that exhaust and gas tank, then send me those wheels and you are good to go

wordslikebullets, great story, sounds like you started out with a safe, running, driving car!! That is NOT this one, I've seen lots of guys start "restoring" cars like this because they were a "good deal" only to be overwhelmed by the project. And disallousioned (pardon spelling)  by stuff they see in MCG or MM or even here for that matter.  Then time goes and their spirit and wallet are drained.                                                                                          I have a 68 Dart GTS 340 car, that was way better than this thing... (but still a crusty POS)... I parted that out too (still got many parts left) and sent parts all accross the counrty. And made a few friends in the process! Countless other a bodys have lived on because of this. I also have a 74 Charger, that was very rough and 75% parted out when I got her. She didn't get crushed either, she's still helping others live on!
Now I have a neighbor down the block w a 70 Charger thats been sitting in the garage for a zillion years (318/auto) its crusty too. BUT it's all there!!! If I ever get the opportunity to buy her I will.  She would make a great resto candidate!  :coolgleamA:

You know, they are pretty much making almost every single part to restore these cars, so I suppose anything is restorable, you really just need to have the vision to look beyond what is visible to the naked eye.. I'm sure it's not all that bad, it looks like it has a colorful history behind it with the slapper bars and mag wheels and such, it could have been somebodys weekend warrior, who knows? I'd like to see somebody buy this and chemically strip it to see what really is lurking, either way it can be restored..

We just sold a 68 383 Charger with no engine/trans for $2800. About eight months ago, we sold a different 68 383 charger for $3500 that was nice. No engine or trans. So if you are really looking to find one, check the classifieds. They are there. One of my friends just cut a 68 318 charger up because it was about as rusty as this one. I know of one that I can buy for around $500-$800 that still has the 383 in it. (pic enclosed). All you have to do is look. Everyone says that they can't find any mopars, well get in the zone and go drive the forgotten back roads slowly and keep your eyes open. Check out this link. I took these all in one day on a 300 mile drive. I ended up with the gold duster for $375 and have been driving it since I got it. Now I am doing a 360 swap into it. I took these pics on April 26th of this year. http://s60.photobucket.com/albums/h4/Jeremymacdonald/Scouting%204-26-09/

If I get that car, chances are I will turn it into a 69 500 clone.

I have been keeping my eyes open and have seen all kinds I grew up in North Dakota so I know about auctions, driving the back roads, and keeping your eyes open but for the last few years I have been living in California, Orange County to be precise.  In Cali it seems that cars are $2-3k higher than anywhere else that I have lived.  But maybe Im not looking hard enough.  I do work for Meguiars Car Wax(I'm the only Mopar Guy here) and go to lots of car shows and meet all kinds of people and what have you. So I'm looking and I know that i will find the right one.  I know of one Bronze 69' charger 500 that a friend of the family owns and he is old and only drives it to the store now and then.  So maybe when he wants to give up driving I might get a chance to get it.  For now I will keep my eyes open looking for a good deal and I will get one it just might not be right now.

I dont want to bicker back and forth, but it doesnt really need full quarters, at leats not what I can see. Just the skins, which are 200 a piece. The tailligth panel mite be useable, just not a show car, you can make your own wheel houses from simple steel metal-$40. Trunk floors can be had to 250 from yearone in two pieces. Again, doesnt need to be a show car. Call me cheapbut I know I can make a stronger xmember in less than a day, you should see my truck...All I was trying to get at is that that car doesnt need to be a show piece, it all the kings men can put humpty dumpty back together again for less if you want to do your own work.
