So for the money would it be better to have a pre built steel building or a garage completely built from the ground up. Im need it to hold a 68 charger and a 37 chevy pickup plus enough room for the wife and I to live in for awhile until I can start having my house built. I need it to be tall enough to hold at least one lift. The cars dont have to be in the shop in the beginning but after we move in our house it does have to be enough to hold those two plus all my tools and stuff. Any ideas from those of you who already have shops???

Steel is cheaper to put up but if you want to work in it you'll basicly be building a building inside of it for the most part. You need to keep it warm in the winter if thats a issue for your area. You need to keep it cool in the summer sun. Trust me it will be like an oven in there when the sun is beating on it. And it rains inside them from the condisation that forms on the inside of the steel roof.

We have a separate "ToughShed" built 1 car garage.....I've got 4 feet or so of room on each side. Glad I have even that.
For your needs, I'd plan on building a 2 story building. Put a nice 1brm/1bath apartment (granny unit) on top. Size the joint so you have the shop floor plan you want which will define the size of the apartment.
More outlay up front but you get a nice garage AND a very nice apartment to live in while you build the Palace of 70 Virgins.   : Plus once you move into the new house, the above the garage unit is a built-in source of rental revenue..........read parts!

elacruze, I remember the thread on your garage expansion plans and it looks great so far. I enjoy doing remodeling like that. Looks like you're ready to frame it up. This is going to be fun to watch as it progresses. I know you're busy but pix are part of the POD. Plus no mortars just the Mrs. 
It would be kinda cool if it were practical to help members "raise" their shops. I can picture a bunch of forum guys descending on one of our homes. A couple would be actually working.........the rest would be support and logistics near the kegger.

i was actually getting ready to lift the roof a couple feet to get it in, but the son in law (who's a contractor) said i didnt have to. just move the span boards over (1 each way) and then up in the peak put a support across the peak of each rafter. i really enjoy the lift. so much easier to work on stuff. plus it fit in a regular height garage. the only draw back doing it this way is that when the car is up, the garage door has to be down.
