What to look for, when seeing a Hemi.

This afternoon, maybe, i'm going to look at a Hemi engine that's for sale.
My question is what to look for, where are the numbers what do they mean?
It's supposed to be a early Hemi and the ad doesn't say if it's a 426. Will i see the difference between a 392 and a 426 immediately?

All input is appreciated, haven't really looked into Hemi information before because i never thought to get one.
It's supposed to have a tranny to and he can let the engine run at the place..

A Hemi has the same 727 as a 440 and 383 right??

Greets,
Chris.

Charger-Bodie

The early (first generation) Hemi engines had the distributer in the rear.

The 2nd generation Hemi has it in the front , just like a 383 or 440.
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

The newer (426) Hemi will accept any 383/440 trans. Hemi trans had beefier innards than most of the big block transmissions but any will bolt up to and function behind the elephant.

Lots of good info available at this site: http://www.mopar1.us/bigblock.html

If what you seek is the crown jewel, then I think that most everyone would say that it is the 426 Hemi Stage I & II, produced from 1964 to 1971, with the casting number of 2468330.

I am not clear where that casting number appears on the block, I think it depends on the year of manufacture and whether it is a Hemi for racing or street use.

Commercial 426 Hemis had the casting number 2658836. Again, location of the number on the block I think depends on the year. I believe they can be built up just like any Hemi.

The site mentioned above has lots of info but not the location of the numbers.

The first generation Hemi is a great motor and should still be considered for a build.

Thanks for the great info guys!! :2thumbs:

But without even going there i know now it's a 392. Maybe still worth a build, but than i'd rather go for a 440.

Thanks again,
Chris.

I think to fit on a Charger will need some firewall job to fit, due the distributor location.

I know somebody did fit that engine on a black 68 I think and had to give some room for that. I rememeber saw that pic on the old board.

392 engine fancy has been refloated since couple of years now. Even some new emblems for them has been made

Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

The 392 is a nice engine and street rodders love it.  There are companies that sell the parts to rebuild these.  I would say if you can get a deal on the engine you could use it for trade stock to get the 440 you are looking for.  You rarely run across those old hemi's but you run across 440's quite often.  I don't know what the old hemi's go for but the 440's can be had in long blocks for between roughly $300 and $800 depending on where you live.

Chargerfreak

Problem is, i live in The Netherlands ;D

440's are available here too, but a lot pricier than in the U.S. Tomorrow i'm going to look for a 440 here. It's a '68 HP 440 block. Already bored etc.

Chris.
