Ok. Long story short, I shot a video of the mobile Vietnam Memorial Wall when it came into a local town tonight. I'd like to maybe upload it to youtube for some friends to see. On the camera it is like 500 megs. It's less than 8 minutes long. When I tried to convert it to something I can see on my computer it saved it as an AVI file that is around 1.5 gigs.

Is this normal? If I wanted to upload this to Youtube do I upload this file that is a gig and a half in size?

convert it to an mpeg if you like or you are allowed up to 1 gig per video so your video should upload fine. it will take a while to upload but it will work. my camera loads to large files as well and i wont spend the money to buy a video converter. youtube has upgraded to handle the larger files.  give it a shot before you go pulling your hair out. it will probably upload

how do you get it to the computer?? do you need any special stuff??, no info in my camcorder instructions.  can you do it with any camcorder or do they have to be big dollar units??

hmm, wiat a minute, what type of file is it when you put it on your computer, i missed the part about not being able to view it on your computer till its converted....  either way youtube is best with mpeg files but others will work as long as you are under 1 gig

mauve66- you need a camcorder with a usb port on it, you can then plug it into the computer and "burn" it to a folder. some newer ones have cards as well and you just copy it from the camcorder card to the computer.

If you don't have a converter zamzar.com works well though they too have a 1 gig limit...which you could get around by splitting the video in half, converting both, then merging them back together in a program of your choice like (windows movie maker) before uploading it.

I have one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/Brand-New-Video-Safe-Smart-Disk_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ65Q3a12Q7c66Q3a2Q7c39Q3a1Q7c72Q3a1205Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem3ef584e98bQQitemZ270407100811QQptZLHQ5fDefaultDomainQ5f0QQsalenotsupported myself and it works very good, you need a video editing program though that can capture the footage though. I have Video Explosion Deluxe software that I use as the capture video footage. When you use this program, the computer should store the video footage in My Videos folder. Smart Disk has a USB hub which two RCA outlet thingys one for Video and one for Audio. If your camcorder has the RCA hookups this would be the way to go bud.

They are .MOD files. I can view them with the software that came with the camera but I have to convert it to something else like avi or mpeg to view them with media player. The one I converted to an AVI went from 500 megs as a MOD to a gig and a half as an AVI.

Ok, I figured it out. Got it down to 13 megs and saved it as a WMV. I guess you just have to be at least as smart as the software you're trying to work with.

http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,57157.0.html That is the camcorder I have and it comes with everything you need to get it on your computer. It also has software included that you can use to edit the movies.

Thanks. I think my biggest problem is I start the damn thing recording before I actually have it focused in. And then if I happen to talk to someone while recording I tend to look at them and the camera wanders off.

That old Dart was interesting. I didn't see it down at the wall Thursday night when I was there with the color guards walking the wall. I'm hoping it's there tomorrow for the closing ceremony.
