I thought all 68 Charger R/T's with a 440 were all painted tourquoise from the factory. This cars owner claims only the outside of the car was cosmetically/painted/ restored. :shruggy: :shruggy: :shruggy: Did some cars come from the factory with orange 440's in 1968? I've never seen one and I've seen possibly 100's of 68 Chargersd through the years. I'm 100% sure my 68 triple black Charger would look better with an orange engine but I painted my 440 tourquoise like every other 68 440 Charger I've ever seen.

An orange engine in a '68? Not that I have ever seen.....the car was built in '67 to boot, and has the wrong shifter too. Nice car, but as for originality?........I dunno.

charge-it

I also noticed it had the wrong shifter handle. I don't see the small amber reverse light on the dash and the rear end looks like an 8 1/4, not A dana 60. :shruggy: :shruggy:

I don't know much about 68's but that is definitely a Dana 60 :yesnod:

Dans 68

I have never seen one, but with Chrysler never say never. Being a Nov 10 '67 build it should be blue, and so I think it was repainted. As it is the original engine (they do say #'s matching) do a little scraping in an out of the way area on the engine and see what turns up   :scratchchin:. And as charge-it noticed it should have an Inland shifter, not a Hurst. Way too early for a Hurst. Either way, it is a nice car.

I thought the 68 440s were painted blue if they had A/C and orange if they didn't or vice versa.  :shruggy:

Actually, I think this might be a 383 paint Orange or blue thing?

P.S. Sure are a lot of 68 440 4spd R/Ts for sale on ebay all of a sudden

This second one states it's not the original motor

It is a nice car but I don't buy that it is all original except for exterior paint. The underside has been detailed and I see some new resto parts under the hood.  I have seen a lot of unrestored cars through the years and the engines don't look that good after 22,000 miles or 41 years.

I don't see where it states that it isn't the original engine.  In fact it implies a couple of times that it is.  I would need a lot more proof to believe that it was originally orange.

No Sale on an orange '68 motor.

The only orange motor you could get in '68 had the "easy access" spark plugs.

The valley pan is unpainted and the spark plug wire holders are installed incorrectly along with many, many other things. Look at all the bubbling around the wrong master cylinder.

The thing that stands out to me is the head rest on the front seats.  Those did not come out till late 68 model year.  My early 68 R/T (build March 68) does not have them and they were not mandatory by the government till late 68.  I am not sure if they were an order only option??? Maybe someone could comment on that.  By the way my engine matching numbers engine was blue.

I have never seen a 68 440 that was painted orange.  This was also true for 383's.  I have owned 68s, 69s, and 70s, and all of my 68's were turquoise or blue.  As for the air conditioned cars being blue, and non air orange, not true. All 68 big blocks were turquoise.  :2thumbs:

Headrests - Jan 1969.

Headrests were optional on 69's before that - I can't comment on a '68 - but if I had to guess I would say probably.

Say's it's numbers matching - show the proof.  Most likely the engine was pulled and the original owner said to paint it orange. :shruggy:

Nice car though. :2thumbs:

I friend of mine just restored a 68 and did a lot of research on this.  In 68, it was not an option-at least what he found in his research.  The car he restored had 69 seats in it.

There's some weird things about this car.  I would personally be a little cautious.  Just me though...

It's shown as an available option in the 68 dealer data book.  It seems strange that it would be an option in 67 and 69 and then skip a year in between even though they list it as available.

mjwebb

AND, this is his first eBay sale...no feedback....red flag perhaps.....

ds440

Yes, all '68 440's were turquoise.

I'm not sure about the headrests, but I thought that it was an option in '68.

The other thing that I noticed is that the fendertag is optioned for a Y-6 BLACK vinyl top. :scratchchin:  White would be Y-7.

But it does have the option codes for the tachometer, 26" radiator, rear seat speaker, 4 speed and the Dana rear.  It's a cool car, but doesn't appear to be all original.

And the unfortunate part is that making a statement like that on the internet leads to threads like this whereas if he were truthful people would more likely be posting about what a great looking car it is and indirectly helping him sell it.

Yup - A nice piece - Master Cylinder has been changed and it has electronic but that's minor stuff. I love un-screwed with cars like these.  :2thumbs:

yep me to ! only original once !! i'm still amazed they keep turning up  :o  after all this time , makes you wonder what still could be out there hidden in a lock up , barn etc :scratchchin:  .... would love that car . i would not  do  any thing except !!  like you say not correct master cyliner , get the correct bendix one  ,

still no way that other 68 came with a orange motor  ,  unless the original motor was granaded early on  late 68 early 69 & the orange one is a waranty motor !  ,  that might be causing the confusion  :shruggy: :popcrn:

I have an early 68 (Inland shifter, no shift light) with headrests. They were optional in 68 but, as stated, mandatory in January 1969.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.
