What books are on your nightstand?? (i.e., what are you reading?)

I thought this would make a great thread, as I'm sure we all do a bit of reading. I try to read about an hour a day, but lately it has been reduced to about 15 minutes before the eyelids get too heavy. Don't read too much into the collection, as some were gifts (the bottom two  ;)) but I believe it does give a little insight into the reader.  ::)   I add to and take away from the stack all the time. I read a chapter from each, as it suits me. The only car book there is a good read.  :yesnod:

My friend recently got me started reading William Johnstone's series "In The Ashes". I really didn't think I was going to like them but after the first couple chapters I was hooked in. I'm on book 4 out of 33 so needless to say I'll have plenty of reading material for the summer. Hopefully I'll be done by the time Joseph Wambaugh comes out with his next book of his series.

Well, I'm in the middle of a book I really don't like, but just want to finish anyway, so I won't bother talking about it - instead I'll talk about the things I *do* like, even though I'm not reading them right at this moment :)

Any of the 'Ender' books by Orson Scott Card.

Pretty much anything by Tad Williams.  He needs to get off 'is arse and finish the Shadowmarch series!! :)    The War of thorns (I think?) is a great book, and the Memory, Sorrow & Thorn saga is a perfect example of what an epic fantasy novel should be.  Otherland series was a REALLY slow starter, but turned out extremely good as well.

Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series was awesome right up 'til the very end when he unleashed the ultimate deus ex machina to suddenly make everything right.  Still, even with that huge flaw, it's an excellent series.

Stephen R. Donaldson's Covenant series is really good, can't wait for the next one.  The gap series was good, too.

Larry Niven is exceptional.  I particularly enjoy his suppositions around the interaction of evolution and psychology (as best represented in the motie saga and ringworld books).  Really cool stuff.

I don't have books on my nightstand....or a nightstand  However, the only book I've really enjoyed reading was the Slash autobiography. I've read it 4 times.

If you liked that, I'd strongly recommend Motley Crue's "The Dirt" and Nikki Sixx's "Heroin Diaries". To a lesser extent, there's also "Watch You Bleed: The Saga of Guns N Roses", which is a good 'overall' history of the band, but some of the sources are sketchy. It's a good complimentary read to the Slash book. Oh..before I forget, since you're a Randy Rhoads/Ozzy fiend, check out Rudy Sarzo's "Off the rails", it's about his time with Ozzy and talks about Randy, the plane crash, etc from an interesting perspective.

As for what I'm reading...right now I'm on a thriller kick. Just got done reading "The Boys From Brazil" and just started "The ODESSA file". It's not exactly high literature, but now and then I need to get away from the serious stuff and read something for pure entertainment.

I loved the Thomas Covenant series.

I also like anything by Robert Ludlum. I have been reading a lot of history lately. I read about 15 books last year on the Klondike gold rush and currently am reading a book called Vimy about the taking of Vimy Ridge in France by the Canadians during the first world war.

I also read the Jean Aul series last year which I enjoyed and well as a few other series. I read a couple of hours a night due to sleeping issues!

I follow 3 series fanatically:

Terry Brooks' "Shannara" series.
Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonriders of Pern" series (although, I feel the series has gone downhill since her son Todd McCaffrey has taken it over).
And the "Halo" series, written by various authors.

A friend also recently got me into Steven Kings "Dark Tower" series.  I need to find book 4...

I've also been a Tom Clancy fan ever since I read "The Hunt for Red October" back in middle school.  I should see if he's got any new ones...
