Time for the engine build

I have finally gotten to the point of ordering all of the parts for the engine build.  I had been sending PMs to Ron on this, but decided to create a thread to help everyone that is interested.

If you could would you look over my list on these items and make sure I am ordering the right parts.  I am going to go with the 505 build like joflaig's with the 505.  I have an automatic with 3.55 rear gears.  I am using the hemi torque converter as Ron recommended in joflaig's build.  I have decided to go with the Indy Cylinder heads instead of the MP ones as the cost is not too much more, but there is much more potential for the Indy heads if needed in the future.

I have contacted Porter Racing Heads, but have not yet heard back from him.  I plan to send the heads to him so he can do the work to get them ready to go.  I believe this is the stage one port and prep.  If I go with this set up which intake manifold should I use?  I believe it would be either the Indy (not sure which one) or the Holley intake as you suggested in joflaig's build.  I am running a stock hood and want to preserve that.  What will I need in the way of air cleaner with your suggestion?

I got a call back from Duane and he has given me his recommendations.  I am not an expert so I don't know which way to go.  He said I should go with the Indy EZ Heads with the Holley Dual Plane intake.  This is in line with Ron's recommendation.  He recommended the stage I port and prep as Ron suggested.  He however recommended the Harlan Sharp Rockers and a comp cam XS290s cam nitrited with comp cam edm lifters.  What are your thoughts on this cam with this set up?  If I go with a solid cam what cam and lifters would you recommend?

Here are some of the parts I have listed to order.  This is not a complete list, but what I have questions on for now.  I will make an entire parts list when completed for anyone to use in the future.  Let me know if these are correct or if I should go with a better part.

Year One:

1.   Hemi Oil Pan (Part No. E91) http://www.yearone.com/serverfiles/fbshopmain2.asp?cat=1
Is this the actual pan you refer to?  It is a milodon pan, but looks correct?  If this is correct which is the correct pickup?

I fitted the Comp Cams XS290S cam in my stroker and am pleased with it's performance, also get 10" vacuum at idle (850RPM). I thought about the Comp roller rockers but they are recommended for no more than a 1.5" outer diameter spring and the Edelbrock springs on my heads are slightly more. The other thing I don't like about those rockers is the ball/ball push rods, I prefer a ball/cup pushrod because the cup holds oil for better lubrication. I went for the Crane ductile iron rockers and so far they've been no problem.

Thanks Mick.  I was a little worried about the cam because of the loss of some low end, but I think with all of the torque the low end should be no problem and the gain at the upper end will be noticeable.

Looks like a Killer build !  :2thumbs:

The Harland Sharps are probably being recommended because they fit well on the EZ heads....excellent geometry and sweep across the valve tip. I have them in my 446. Those Comps you linked to are OK but if you decide to upgrade to a roller cam in the future they will be inadequate. Buy the whole HS kit that comes with rockers/shafts/spacers and hold downs. Last set of rockers you will ever buy.  :2thumbs:

I think you meant to say the Holley single plane Street Dominator  ;) It's an excellent match for a street strip stroker and provides excellent hood clearance. Just use a drop base air cleaner like the one on Joflaigs car.

Mancini carries the hemi pan and pickup in a package deal. Last time i looked it was ~ $160 for both parts. If you don't drill the block out for the 1/2in oil mod just order the 3/8 in pickup. The 4.15 MP stroker windage tray works fine with the 505 rotating assembly.

The xs290s is a very nice profile for what you're doing. It will make power everywhere....from just off idle to redline. The nitriding is something new that Comp is offering and is highly recommended. The EDM style lifters pressure feed oil to the cam lobes as opposed to the traditional "splash lube" off the rotating assembly....again highly recommended. Dual purpose cars that run agressive flat tappet cams can use all the help they can get...especially when extended periods of idling and low speed operation are part of the game plan.  :yesnod:

The 440 Source parts look good and you'll want to install main studs and have the block line bored during the machining process. The distributor works great but i've also had good luck with the MP electronic unit. The MSD billet is definately a superior part.

You want the Carter 6psi 120gph "street" pump. The one you linked to is the race pump and would require a regulator.

Just have Dwayne order the cam and lifters for you and he can ship them out when he sends your "massaged" EZ's....that way you will get the nitriding and edm lifters. Dwayne is a Comp dealer so he will make sure there are no foul ups. Good choice on the heads....and the head porter. You won't find better

I'd say that you're well on your way to a very solid and reliable build that will give you years of service. Your back tires are gonna hate you though !

I have the HS roller rockers, XS290S, 512 rotating assm., ported Stealth heads, and a stock '69 6bbl induction system for my 505" motor.  Just about everyone from  Ron( Thanks for all the help so far) to Cab Burge on moparts seems to think this will be a really nice combination.  After I picked all the parts I really felt good about the choices since Mick70RR has a very similar set-up that he seems to be quite pleased with.  Cab told me that with my 4.10 gears and this combo running on my Firestone redline bias ply tires that at any speed in 1st or 2nd and even at 50-60mph in 4th I should be able to stab the pedal and smoke the tires.  YEEEHAAAWWW!

Thanks for the info everyone.  I am going to call Duane up right now and get the heads and other parts on their way.  I will update my part list later today.
