Went to see Chicago last night, they were really good.

I like their early stuff, but my interest in them faded when they became mostly elevator music later on in the late 70's. My daughter Kate plays bass in the school jazz band & they're playing a Chicago tune, "25 or 6 to 4" for the upcoming spring concert. A few weeks ago she heard a commercial on the radio that Chicago was doing a concert locally, & asked if we could go. I easily said yes since it was another classic band & not Justin Beiber or something else annoying. Of course I'd have taken her to see Beiber if that's what she wanted, but I'd have to add toilet scrubbing & oven cleaning to her list of things to do.

Anyway, the concert was good & there are still 4 of the original, founding members in the band who had no trouble finding the energy to keep rocking. The 2 songs that made the whole show worth seeing was "I'm a Man" (a Steve Winwood tune) with an impressive drum solo by both drummers, & "25 or 6 to 4" with a long guitar solo.

They're touring right now, so if you like Chicago & never saw them, it's worth going to.  :2thumbs:

We see them every year Bob. Deb is a huge fan. We have tickets for this summer up here. Did they have someone come out and sing "If you leave me now" with them?

They auction off a VIP package for every show that includes a meet and greet, VIP seats, and the chance to sing that on stage with them. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

We've got tickets for Will Hoge tonight.

Great show.   :2thumbs:

Guns N' Roses in '89, I think it was.  I was 16 and surrounded by the seediest, rowdiest, dirtiest, most intoxicated, and most naked and loose women I had ever met in my life up to that point.  Also an unknown group by the name of Sound Garden that opened up for 'Guns; the crowd hated them, some of that due in part to Axl and friends being 2.5 hours late.

I then saw Stone Temple Pilots in '96, before Scott went to jail for felony drug charges.

All in all I hate people, crowds, which is why I avoid concerts like the plague.  I also don't like live performances.  Maybe it's just my bad hearing and/or the abysmal quality of youtube videos but live performances sound like garbage to me...

Yeah, they did that song & the guy who won did a pretty good job with the vocals, even the high notes. Not one of my favorite songs by them, but I joined in for the standing ovation everyone gave him.   :2thumbs:

We sat in row T in section 103 which wasn't bad.

Last night I took my wife & daughter to see Roger Waters' performance of The Wall at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY. It was an incredible show & I was very impressed, but I was also a little sad at the same time. You see, I saw the original Wall show when Pink Floyd was still together at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island back in 1980. Little did I know at the time, that soon after that show Pink Floyd wouldn't exist as "Pink Floyd" anymore.

Waters' ego pissed off the others & keyboardist Rick Wright left. They argued in court over who gets to use the Pink Floyd name for years, & in my opinion, none of them made music as good after that as when they were all together. (Kind of like what the Beatles did.) They did do a small reunion show that I would have loved to have seen, but the chances of that ever happening now are over since Rick Wright died not too long ago.

Anyway, going by memory from the 1980 show, last night's show had some upgrades to it that were better. The sound was great like always, but computerization does wonders for lighting & effects. I do remember most of the 1st show, but after 32 years I forget a few things.....LOL  The films they showed back then seem a bit crude compared to the way they were able to project them onto the screen & the wall now. The giant inflatable pig now flies over you by remote control & not by cables. The guitarist was good & stood at the top of the wall to do the solo on Comfortably Numb just like David Gilmour did, but I would have loved to see Gilmour up there.

The best part of last night's show to me though, was watching my 13 year old daughter's reaction to it. She brought her camera & took a ton of photos & a couple of videos, & I got her a Wall t-shirt. It'll be a show that she likely won't forget, just like the one I saw in 1980.

I had to steal a couple of pics off the internet until my daughter downloads hers.

saw Van Halen w/ DLR again a couple of weeks ago. I had seen them back in '07 when they first reunited, and at the time I wasn't impressed and didn't think it was that memorable. This time was much better. The Kid (Wolfie) has really gotten pretty good at filling in for Michael Anthony so the band was tighter than a...well, fill in the rest.

Dave somehow still jumps around the stage (though not as often). Eddie, for all his craziness, can still play like a mofo.

Hahah Myk GNR fangirls back in the day seriously were exactly like that.   When I was 16 or 17 I worked at KFC one summer, and there was this bleach blonde tatted girl there who didn't pay much attention to me cause she had a dude.    She caught me singing Bad Obsession while frying up some extra crispy one day and after that dude didn't matter so much.   She came around the corner and said 'Hey that's a GNR song' and I said 'yep' and she said 'Cool you wanna hang out after work?'.   I still owe those guys all a beer for that one.

Hey Bob.... :slap:

Time to add a few names more to the never ending list.

1) Stickmen
2) The Crash Kings
3) Stone Temple Pilots

Last Friday was the "Stickmen" at a very, very, very............very small venue. Two questions, right?

Q-1 Who are the Stickmen?   :shruggy:

A-1 Tony Levin on bass & Pat Mastelotto on drums, both from King Crimson, & Marcus Reuter on guitar.

Q-2 How small was the venue?   :shruggy:

A-2 Including myself, the wife, our daughter, the band, the dozen or so people that work there, I think it holds about 50 people. It's an old mansion that's in the process of being renovated & converted to some kind of new age church. (not my church, btw) It was great to see a band play, in what was basically a large living room. They did a question & answer segment between sets & it was cool to hear stories they had about playing with other bands & musicians.

Last night, my wife & I took our daughter to see The Stone Temple Pilots & the band that opened the show, The Crash Kings, at Bethel Woods, the Woodstock site. A couple of weeks ago my daughter mentioned that STP was touring & that she wanted to go see them. I like them, & she never really badgers us or whines about having to have something, so I figured why not? Both bands were okay, but the sound wasn't so great, including Scott Weiland's voice. On the earlier STP recordings it sounds better & deeper. Maybe he's losing it or maybe it's just enhanced more in the studio.   :shruggy:

The highlight of the night for my daughter was meeting The Crash Kings after the show. She got an autographed CD & took a picture with them. It was all she talked about during the ride home.    ;D

One of the things that's awesome about living in L.A. is that it is not uncommon for a big band (and by "big band" I don't mean the genre of music that was cutting edge when Old Moparz was in college) to do last minute and/or secret shows at small venues. A few weeks ago, my buddy hit me up asking if I wanted to go see the Deftones. They were doing a just-announced show at the Troubadour (super small venue...the size of a basketball court, if not smaller) the next day. Amazing show.

Big band music.   :smilielol:

Music that was "cutting edge" when I was in college sucked so bad I stopped listening to just about all of it. I started listening to a lot of jazz & old blues, then Stevie Ray saved my hopes that music would survive. That new wave crap that the record companies & MTV passed off as music made me feel ill.   ::)

I saw the Deftones open for KISS in 1996 in Albany.

Good grief. It's still a wonder how they're still around.

Terrible.
