Ok, my test drive of my newly delivered Charger R/T went South fast.  I heard a bang, other noises, then had severe vibration in the front of the car, steering column etc.  Car started to overheat so I pulled over and got it towed home.  Here is what I found.

Fan blade - broken  found number 2863 216 stamped on it  (it this the correct one)

lower fan shroud broken

radiator leaked all coolant out

It looked like there was old brazing around one of the fan bolt holes, would this be my culprit?

216 is the correct fan. NOS are still around as well as good used. Does your fan clutch have an 070 on it? It doesn't look like one in the pic - looks like slotted holes.

Wow - I have never seen that happen before. Brazing huh - probably the culprit - probably put it out of balance big time too. I guess it took your rad core out as well. Rad should be a 956.

Too bad all that let loose!

Yeah the 2863216 7-blade fan was the most common on 70 R/Ts
Bad luck on the fan turning into shrapnel.

Sorry to hear that about your Charger.

I'll relate a little story here if I may, Many years ago I found a little '48 Chev coupe in the back lot of the dealership I worked at, noticed a 4 inch slash in the hood and the fan was missing one blade. I bought the car, put a used fan on it and repaired and painted the hood. About a month later I was driving along when something shot through the hood and the engine began running very rough. Yep, it threw another blade through the same spot in the hood. I replaced the fan, and the water pump this time and never had the problem again.

It sounds as though the fan on your Charger may have been cracked for whatever reason and someone tried brazing as a repair.  :shruggy:

the good news out of all this, just last Wed. I bought a recored correct # radiator the my car, it has not arrived yet so the old replacement radiator took the "hit" and my new one is still good to go.  Now the bad news; the Mrs. doesn't know I spent all that $$$ on the radiator because I spent all the $$$$ on the car!

I checked the 70 Registry broadcast sheet database.

For a 70 R/T 440-4bbl Automatic N95 California Emissions car...

If your car had the 26" Rad PN2998961 then the correct 7 blade fan would indeed be the PN2863216 version

If your car had the 22" Rad PN2998960 then the correct 7 blade fan would be the PN2863224 version

Yeah - I didn't see an axle package on his fender tag so it may be a 22".

I missed that he had posted a picture of his fender tag....it has the "26" denoted so all is well, he has the 26" rad.

The BIG DUHHHH! I was too busy looking for an axle package rather than looking for the obvious :icon_smile_blackeye:

I put it down to remembering too much and it being Monday.
