383 Alternator Bracket:

Hello all,

I am just curious to see where you may have found the triangular shaped alternator bracket for a 383, 4 brrl, BB 69' Charger in chrome. Perhaps, I could just have my old one powder-coated in a gray/aluminum finish. But everywhere I find them new, they say that they fit a 383-440 block, but they are not interchangeable. I learned that the 440 is approximately an inch wider than the 383 and cannot be interchanged between these two motors. I realize that I could buy stock brackets, from say the Paddock for example, but I was just curious to see if anyone has purchased a chrome bracket specifically for the 383...Thank you for your time and for any info.
All the best,
Aaron

Aaron,
I know this isn't chrome like you are looking for but the reason I'm posting it is because I believe they are the same for the 383 or 440(ie: interchangeable)
I bought this exact setup BTW(i have a 383)

Is this an A/C or non A/C car.....maybe that is what they meant by not interchangeable as they take different brackets depending on that option.

Here are a couple but just so you know, they aren't exactly like the original as far as number of holes etc...(compare the pictures with the link from megaparts above)

Stock non-ac 383/440 cars used the same bracket. There are two holes on one of the triangle points - the one that goes to the head. One hole is 383, the one on the very outside is 440.

mikepmcs

That's really strange as all these listings say it will fit either 383 or 440... but.... the brackets only have one hole where there are 2 on a stock bracket. :shruggy:

Typical misinformed(?) ebay sellers. With one hole they are going to either fit a low block or a raised block - not both.  :icon_smile_dissapprove:

The stock bracket is what he should have chromed.

Thanks Max, that's what I was fishing for.  Appreciate the clarification.

No problem - I have been burned on ebay before and hate it to happen to others.  :2thumbs:

Here is a stock non-AC 361/383/413/426/440 bracket. I know, I know - the heater hose bracket is not on yet.  ;D

Because of the 413/426/440 being a "Raised Block" - taller deck, the heads sit higher too, hence the two holes.

Captain D

Thank you fellas for the responses, all of this stuff is awesome to learn about. Below is a link to another seller on the net. He has them in either black or chrome finish (w/ hardware included). His has the two holes (for either the 383 or 440), and w/out AC, so it should work it seems. Anyone purchase from this place:

Thank you again!

I say get it.  Looks like it has all the correct hardware and spacers as well. :2thumbs:
Bouchillon is reputable.

If you need a bracket, I have a spare one for my car.  I ended up getting two when I only needed one.   :slap:  Let me know if you would want it.

A/C cars the alternator mounts with the compressor bracket - and they are unique to engine size

a little bit disagreed

maybe I'm thinking small blocks  :scratchchin: - either way I'm pretty confident the B/RB engines with factory air - the alt brackets are engine size specific

I got one dem chromium Brackets for the NON-A/C 383-440 with the two holes and I thought it was Factory chrome, but it must be on old Direct Connection piece....Hmmmm...

yeah it looks it is... but on BB they are not part of the compressor bracket as at least I understood from you  :scratchchin:

I am putting a 440 in my 68 383 car with A/C. I have been told the alternator brackets are the same. Can someone confirm? I was not sure it was confirmed earlier in the thread.

Thanks,
