Have you tried buying ammo lately?

I bought two 400-round bricks of .22 shells back in November of '08 because I heard people were going to be freaking out. All I wanted is enough to go varmint hunting one weekend in June but now I'm thinking I'd like to go again in early July but I might be SOL. I must admit, I'm shocked at how bad it's gotten. Ever since January the stores have been completely cleaned out of .22 ammo and the other calibers aren't much better. I've been checking 2-3 stores twice a week for months and it goes as fast as it come in. Anyone else having trouble with this?

I've heard about this too.  :rotz: In our gated community we had a garage sale that happens in spring and fall. I sold some 380 bullets. Maybe you should check that route?  :shruggy: Actually the guy that bought from me just asked if we had some, .....they were not on display like the rest of the stuff. I really hope this crap ends because I'm wanting another gun soon.  :yesnod:

I can't even get .40 cal ammo round here for just target shooting. It's even trickier trying to find reloading supplies. :flame:

I buy most of my ammo at the gun shows but some like 44 magnum is hard to get, last show one box of 50 rounds was $45.00. 22 ammo is not hard to get, a brick of 500 rounds was $18.00. I buy most of my guns( I am a collector) on Gunbroker.com. I bet i have 30K rounds of ammo for at least 12 diffrent calibers, never enough!!!!. My next gun purchase Im looking at a sub machine gun like a Smith&wesson 76 or a MP40, will need lots of 9MM. :icon_smile_big: Jay.

I get some of my ammo at gun shows, but you got to go early.  The normal ammo goes quick.  Not really any better in price but can usually get 500 round cans of 9mm & 38 special.

Sports store across town usually has what I want at ok prices.

Trying to purchase a 357 around the 1st of the year was crazy. Something about gun manufactures taking the rest of the year off and suppliers not having any stock and a bunch of other crap.

Finally found a hole in the wall place that had what I wanted in the back.

jaak

You cant even get reloading materials either.

This reminds me of the gas shortage we went through last year. The rumor was started that there was going to a shortage and people went out and filled any container that would hold gas...............thus creating the shortage based on a rumor. ::)

Yea, and what annoys me is that I actually want to use it but I'm almost afraid to now because I don't know if/when I'll see it again. Next time I guess I'll just have to buy enough to last the whole summer.

Its been happening here in AZ for several months now. I buy it when I can find it but its almost impossible these days. Walmart has limited it to 3 boxes a day if they have it. 22 ammo is still cheap if you can find it (Walmart $14 for 500rds). I was in a small gun shop yesterday and they had a limit of 2 boxes so my buddy bought 2 and I grabbed 2 boxes to buy for him and they wouldnt sell it to me. Its a shame its come to this they cant take away are second amendment but they will probably find a way to over tax and regulate the ammo. I got a bumper sticker the other day that says "I will keep my guns and freedom you keep the change".
I pointed to two old drunks sitting across the bar from us and told my friend
"That's us in 10 years".
He said "That's a mirror, dip-shit!

i get mine at gun show know a guy who loads new ammo  his price for components keep going up every time he orders . my brother in law work for a rifle barrel maker who makes test barrels for remington. he say they are going to start pumping out ammo like crazy by midsummer

I think the prices of some of the raw materials are doing this more than anything with the govt.  Some seemingly mundane substances have really shot upwards lately on the commodities markets.

You think you guys have it bad....   you all seem to be talking about pretty common rounds...    try finding 7.92x57....     seems to be pretty sporty out here in CA to find....         Plenty of .223 for my ARs but holy hell!  That shit is expensive now!        9mm is dirt common still...    as is .22LR....

Sub Machine gun???   The Sturmgewehr 44 has my vote...    if you can find / afford one

Is anyone a cartridge collector (someone collecting old or odd bullets or cartridges)?

Let me know if you are. I have a collection that is packed up in boxes and I don't know if I'm going to get back into collecting again.

67_Dodge_Charger

Try finding .348 ammo.....  I bought a couple boxes from a local gun shop last spring and paid $48 per box.  That price was low compared to a sporting goods store that used to keep a couple boxes on the shelf.  That same small gun shop is listing the .348 ammo at $68 per box 200 grain.  I am not buying this ammo until the price drops below $55 per box.

Local shops here are not stocking the shelves like they used to.....  It is depressing to go to my favorite stores and find empty slots for what I am looking for.  Someone is making money off of this scare.

I get most of my ammo here www.cheaperthandirt.com .  They sell a variety of types, calibers and brands and it is shipped right to my door.  Just check the restrictions before you order as you state may not allow it.  I order a couple hundrend dollars worth every other month just to keep my supply up.

If you look up .22 long rifle on that site almost everything is out of stock. All but the very expensive stuff and the small volume boxes is cleaned out.

I use blades.  They don't need ammo, and work just fine indoors for self protection.  Especially my wakizashi.

How do blades work for squirrel hunting? Or maybe I'll try a fishing pole this year.

I had a pal load up 400 rds of 30-06 and .308. With the warmer temperatures the T-virus can off-gas easier and result in zombies :2guns:

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

It seems like ammo shortages go in cycles here. Around November you couldn't find any .223 ammo. Then in January you couldn't find any 45 or 40 ammo. Then in March you couldn't find any 9mm ammo. Now you can't find any .22 ammo. It's getting ridiculous.

Rolling_Thunder

I'm currently hand loading a bunch of 50 BMG...     talk about Expensive!    :yesnod:

Is it? Hmmm. I still don't care. ;D

      I just made that up, trying to tie the comments together.

But hey, if you are good at casting for fishing, don't know why you couldn't beam a squirrel in the head with a
1 oz. weight on four pound line on a trout pole, I can cast pretty accurate with that from time spent placing lures into rivers for trout fishing.  Kind of like shooting from the hip with a pistol, you do it enough, and it will go where you look and point your arm.

Around here, .22 rimfire ammo is still readily available. Most of the more common rifle ammo isn't completely wiped out, but has gone up in price...it's the freakin' handgun ammo that's as scarce as duck teeth! There's one sporting goods store here that has long shelves for ammo...just dust & lint is on the handgun side nowdays. Pretty crazy.

Reloading is definitely the way to go, especially if you mold your own bullets. But trying to get primers & powder is the main problem there. Consider yourself lucky when you find them in stores. Around here, there's a bunch of the hoarders who bought ammo & supplies, who are now flipping them on the local classifieds at twice the usual going rate...or more. :icon_smile_angry: I hope they got stuck with rooms full of ammo & supplies, when the prices come back to normal. ;D

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)
