Best (cheapest) Helmut for occasional drag racing?

I just got my Cragar Soft 8 wheels and MT street Drag radials (275/60/15) installed. The local tracks all seem to have a few helmuts to rent for $10 bucks, but I'd rather not drive all the way to a track for a test & tune and find out they're out!

Anyone have advice on what to use and where to find a decent, inexpensive helmut for once in a while racing?

I bought a helmet from Fleet Farm for around $20.00 last year for that very same purpose.

I think I'd be willing to spend a little more. Was that a straw hat or something?

Just make sure you check the rules.  At my local track, they go strictly by NHRA rules and regs.  I would assume that all tracks follow the same.  The helmets we use have to be Snell approved.  I think they still allow Snell 2000 but I would buy a Snell 2005 now.

It looks kind of old-school with that open face deal.  Is that a modern product?

That's what I'd like to find, something a little older looking but meeting modern specs.

That Raider Open Face helmet looks perfect, only $45 or so. How would I know if it meets the specs for drag racing at an average track? It's made for ATVs. Even the company site only goes as far as stating it's DOT approved.

I'm not sure how you would confirm that but Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove WI approved it.

That's good to hear. It's a place I would go. The main track I visit is WIR in Kaukanna.
