I installed a hemi oil pan last year on my 440 and I don't remember how much oil it took, I thought it was 6 qts. Anyway I just changed the oil and filter and I put in 5 qts. started the car shut it off and checked the oil, and its right on the full mark. I thought the hemi pans held 6 qts with the filter.  How many qts. of oil should a 440 with a hemi pan hold with a filter change. Could my dip stick be wrong :shruggy: Do I need to change the dip stick and tube when using the hemi oil pan on a 440 :shruggy:

Did you fill the filter with near a quart and then put in 5 quarts or was five quarts total?

The Hemi pan holds 6 qts plus the filter. What dipstick are you using Alan ? MP replacement dipstick ? :scratchchin:

Its the stock dip stick, at least it sure looks like the stock dip stick it was in the motor when I got it.  When I first put the pan on I thought for sure it took 6 qts. So I got 7 qts. of oil so I would have an extra qt. I put in 5 qts. ran it and then checked it and it reads full. Checked the oil the next day before I started it and it reads right on the full mark :shruggy:Are you saying the hemi pan holds 6 qts. plus more for the filter :shruggy:  What's the total qts. of oil with the filter changed, 6 1/2 or 7 qts.  :shruggy:

Well, I don't understand :shruggy: I got the hemi pan and pick-up from mancini I got 5 qts. of oil in it and it reads full on my oil dip stick :shruggy: The dip stick looks OEM, but how do I know for sure that it is ?  I don't want to run my motor 2 qts. low. Should I get another dip stick and tube, where can I get a replacement dip stick and tube. Its a 440 with a hemi pan do I use a stock dip stick and tube for a 440, or do I need a hemi dip stick and tube. I'm not sure what to do here, you guys say it should hold 7 qts. Going by my dip stick its full with 5 qts.

duh,You must like doing things the "micky mouse" way. I would rather have a dip stick that reads full on the full mark. duh.

I've never seen anyone belittling you in the answers to your questions. Do you think it's possible for you to extend the same courtesy?

I have a repro dip stick and tube that I think I got from the paddock years ago.  I am pretty sure that the 383 with a stock 402 oil pan took 4 qts plus the filter?

How can I tell that the oil pan I got from mancini is a 6 qt. hemi oil pan ??  Also how can i tell if I have the correct oil dipstick ?? If the hemi oil pan holds 6qts. then the oil pan I got is not a hemi pan or the dipstick is not correct.

firefighter3931

Snap a pic of your oilpan and post it....the hemi pan is easily identified.  :yesnod:

You might just have to remark your dipstick...no big deal.  ;)

as said before  the hemi oil pan Mancini sells holds 7 quarts with filter.if you have a 402 pan you can see a big difference. if not the hemi pan is a about an inch or less below k member.i have been running a Mancini pan for 20 years and just changed oil in my car. with 7 quarts of Valvoline premium blue 15-40 diesel oil a filter and 8 oz of EOS my factory 440 6-bbl dipstick is on add line. so when i look at it and its on add line i know its full. i can measure pan for you from block flange to bottom of pan in a little while if you want. car is already up on lift plus my new motor is on engine stand with Mancini hemi pan that i bought and installed 2 years ago.note the hemi pan Mancini sells is repo of 71 pan which is not the same as what you would find on a 69 but fits and works just fine.

Ron, I know I could just mark the dipstick. I guess my question is did all you guys that installed the hemi pan have to remark your dipstick, or did it read on the full mark with 7 qts of oil in the hemi pan ?  Jerry, thanks for the info, my oil pan is about 3/4 of an inch or so below the K-frame. So you say your dipstick reads on the add mark with 7qts. of oil in it. Can I just get another dipstick that will read correctly ? does every ones dipstick not read correctly with the hemi pan ?? I know this sounds like I'm being real picky here, but if I can get a dipstick that will read correctly thats what I will do. Thanks for all the help.

Yes, I remarked my dipstick as well.  The Hemi dipstick tube/stick combo wont work on a 440 because I believe the hole is different in the block?  Dont quote me on that though.

Mine is from Mancini as well ('71 Hemi style pan)

the hemi pan measures 5" top to bottom. you might try stick out of truck 440 , 400 or 360.just checked oil ,car has been sitting 3 days and it reads on add mark 1 quart low which is full and how i have been running it for 20 years.

Alan, i've had the dipstick read differently in the last two Hemi Pan installations i've done. One dipstick was a stock 440 part and the other was an aftermarket dipstick from MP. I just changed the oil....fired it up to circulate and prime the system and shut it off for 5 minutes to allow for the oil drainback to the sump. Then a made a "new" full line on the stick.  :2thumbs:

You'd think someone would have made a dipstick for these applications by now since it's such a popular swap.

I was going to take a pic of my oil pan but, my oil pan looks just like the one in the pic that not just 6T9 CHGR posted. So I guess I'm going to have to put 2 more qts of oil in my motor and then mark a new full mark on my dipstick :rotz: Like Bull said I can't believe no one makes a dipstick for these oil pans :rotz: Also, my oil pan is 5 inches deep, just like jerry had said. So my oil pan must be the hemi pan. Thanks guys for all your help :2thumbs: :2thumbs:  Alan

The 70-71 Hemi pan is the same pan as a 70-71 440 HP. I think someone was making the tube and dipstick for these (440). I wish someone made a good 69 tube  :'(

sorry if im threadjacking but i'm thinking of going with a hemi oil pan since i have to replace my oil pan gasket on my 440. is it worth the investment to go with a hemi pan over a stock 440 pan? is the hemi pan the best pan to get or is an aftermarket 440 pan bettter?  what parts are all needed to do the conversion? and as long as you put 7 quarts of oil in your good on oil? just mark the new reading on the dip stick and your fine? thanks
