440/HEMI reproduction mufflers

       Hey Guys,

           Has anybody here put on the reproduction factory correct 440/Hemi mufflers that you can get from Year One ? What do they sound like? I have Flowmaster Super 44's on my charger right now and I hate the sound. I'm thinking of putting on Flowmaster 40 series mufflers instead but am curious on how the original reproduction mufflers sound like.

Don't know about the originals, and don't see a need unless you are going full resto. Only original that I've ever seen that were unbelievable and absolutely rocked were the chambered on a 69 Chevelle.  Holy SH##, those mothers are loud.   My buddy danny got an original set off the junk man that comes around, brand new, $20 a piece.  We welded em up and stannnnndddd back.   That is one nasty Chevelle!!!

May I suggest the dynomax ultraflows.

The Dynomax sound real close to the originals and flow better than the above mentioned Flowxxxxx

stock style mufflers can be had from Accurate LTD -   Year One mufflers split at the crimp seams after about 2 years...             

As far as the exhaust on the chevelle...    the chambered system was notoriously loud - also I believe not for sale here in CA on camaros due to extremely loud noise.

I just picked up a replacement set of HEMI mufflers for my '70. I got them from Dale's Cuda Shop, they are stamped with the Pentastar & come in several different date codes.
According to Frank Badalson (Roger Gibson Resto's), NONE of the repro mufflers are accurate. The date codes are not stamped correctly, & from what I hear they never had a part# stamped on them. However, they are the "most accurate" repros out there.
They are relatively quiet, & have a nice rumble. Nothing compared to Flowmasters or Dynamax. They are good for a totally stock resto. I've got Flowmasters on the '68, & Dynamax's going on the '69.

Yup - Other than NOS it's all we got for the resto crowd. Dale's, I think are the only ones making them with the P-Star. Josh is tied in with Dale's. FB say they sound close to original. I'm going to find out in a couple of weeks how they compare.

I like the way those sound  . Does it have headers or larger pipes and how is it on the highway?  I found this 2 1/4 H-pipe from an old stock supplier for $155 to use on my SBird clone.  I already have a set of 2 1/4 old stock tailpipes.  The Accurate site lists the 383 and 440 pipes different. I guess the 383 didn't use the H pipe  This H pipe has 70 440 on the pipe sticker and I assumed it would fit the 383 thats in the RR now.  I have a 440 that I plan on getting for it but I thought the 70 383/440 HP exhaust manifolds were the same.  Did I miss something?  They also have old stock oem Walker and IPC mufflers $49 but the same listing is for 383/440/426.  The only bad thing is that all of this is non aluminized as it is old stuff. your are right the 383 cars didn't use H pipe and the H pipe wont work on a 383. reason is 440 is wider.

Prior to restoring my 69 charger, it had an H pipe on it and it is a 383.  The only difference between a 383 and 440 is the block.  They use the same heads and exhaust manifolds.  440s are referred to as RB engines (raised block) vs. 383s being B engines.  If it is any wider, which I doubt, it will not be much.

I am running factory HP manifolds & Accurate's complete H-pipe system.

Only difference is that its a full 2.5" system front to back.  Originally the H-pipe was 2.5" then it cut down to 2.25" at the mufflers to the tips.
The mufflers I am running are his Hemi High flow ones (ACM-6056)  Had a great sound that you can enjoy taking on long cruises but can bark at the same time.
Now are there "better" performing/flowing mufflers out there?  Absolutely but I bought these for the look and the added benefit of sound was a welcome addition!

It will be a little bit wider because the block is taller for the longer stroke.

I knew about the block height diffs but I didn't think about the width being a little wider too  .  Guess I'll check it out when I go to mount it on the 383 and see if a little tweaking will get it in untill I build the 440 way down the road.  The Walker number from an old parts book was 21595 for the Hemi muffler.  Does it look right with anyone's memory?

For ex a 69 H-pipe will only mount up to the corresponding 69 HP pair of manifolds.

Some years shared the same pass side manifold but the drivers side changed IIRC...dont quote me on it.

If you have a YO catalog it will show you the part #'s for the corresponding year manifolds etc....

And from what I've seen around....Accurate's pipes are a better gauge (thicker) than anyone else I have checked on yet. Is anyone running resonators behind their Hemi mufflers on a 440? (that sound was the cat's ass back in the day!)

Yep and I have the right ones for this pipe.  I'm going to the place and put my hands on the supposedly oem hemi mufflers.  I'll try to get a pic and post them.  Didn't mean to hijack the thread on the pipe but I also wanted to hear anybody's oem hemi mufflers.  Had almost settled on the superflows but I liked your sound byte.  Got anymore?
