trans gasket

I've had my 727 rebuilt and put in shift kit in it couple years ago. Before rebuild it used to drip on exhaust and smoke. After rebuild it wasn't leaking/smoking. I started it today and it was smoking again. Do transmission gaskets dry out when you don't drive car and will it improve as I drive it?

Silver, it might not be the gasket.  Have you checked to see exactly where the leak is coming from?

If it is the gasket maybe the bolts just need to be snugged up a bit.  I can't see the gasket drying out though with all that ATF in the pan. I'd check the speedo cable/gear connection while under there.

a real comon place for a 727 to leak is the shift shaft seal, it can look like the pan is leaking also.   it can be changed in the car by pulling the valve body and popping it out, then using a big flat washer and a nut and bolt and pull it back in.  if it is the pan, clean it up really well, snug all the bolts and run a bead of silicone around the outside edge

TRUST ME is so common that in fact SOME TRANNY SHOPS end to break the tailhousing at that point ( there is a tab covering that area ) to be able to work there without remove the complete tranny just for that leak. At least locally!

id be pissed if they broke that tab off my tranny. i would NOT have a shop that does that type of work touch my stuff. it seems alot of tranny shops are flakes. im glad i do my own. ive cleaned that area really well with brake clean and sealed it with silicone before and had good success.
