Back Road Mopars - Few Found in NY

This past weekend I went bow hunting upstate NY in Grahamsville. I was up there on Friday and did not quite dressed correctly. I froze by tail off up in the treestand. So around 10:00 AM I couldn't stand it anymore (I was in the tree since 5:30 AM) and headed back to camp to warm up, re-group and eat something. Well on the way back to camp, I took a different route - back country roads and surprisingly found three Mopars in peoples yards. One 1971 Charger owned by a 25 year old girl that is trying to restore it. I asked her father first if it was for sale and he said no that she loves cars and loves Chargers but is having trouble locating parts. He was a nice guy and I told him that if it was ok with him I would be coming up next week and wouldnt mind stopping by with several places/sources she can contact for parts. Also told him about the message board, but he was a bit lost on the concept. Told him that the message board would most likely help her locate the parts or make new friends with the same interest and car. The Charger was blue with a 400. My digital camera did not work due to the cold. Next time I'm up there, I'll get a picture of the 1971 (& maybe the girl too!). The father was a very nice guy but was pulling out of the driveway on his way out. Didnt really want to ask him at that point to show me the Charger in the back yard.

The next one was a 1970 Road Runner with a 440 six pack. The car looks like it's been sitting there for 6 years! The father of the owner (son) came out opened the hood and everything looked pretty clean. The father was very friendly, he said the car runs very good. I have never seen fender tag  loaded with so many numbers!!! It was a auto on the floor. I asked him if he would sell it and he said no I can't. The father said he bought it for his son for graduation. The father even said it was a shame that it's been sitting for so long. The mother then came out and yelled at the father by saying "Richard does not want anyone touching his car!!" I told her that he was simply showing me the car and that I was not planning on touching the car. I was just admiring it. My freaking camera did not work at the time. I wanted a picture of the fender tag and the interior for you guys and gals to see. Again I think the cold got to it. Anyhow, Fred, the father said just come back with new batteries and I'll show it to you again. Well on the way home Sunday there was a sign on the car, probably from the son or mother that read "Not for sale - so don't ask" and no one was home. So I took pictures from the road. Sad to see a nice RR going to waste. Before I left the day I spoke with the father I told him to tell his son to at least place the car on plywood to avoid the grass from hitting any part of the car and simply covering it would save it a bit more. What a waste!!  :'(

The next day I drove down to the local grocery store by another back road and found a 1970 Duster with a 340, 4 speed 3.91 gears fairly straight and clean. The paint job is kind of rough, the interior is ok - the front seats have been re-skinned. The car was for sale and Kevin the owner was very friendly, especially after I told him that I owned a 68 Charger R/T. Offer me a beer and we started talking. He has a box of parts a spare 3.23 gear box for the car. He offered to fire up the car. The Duster started right up and sounded deep. He is asking $ 7,000. I asked him how firm was he with the number since the fender tag is missing. He said he would move. I have his number if anyone is looking for a Duster. The fender tag was missing, but it might be in the box of parts. I also felt underneath the rear seat to see if I could feel a built sheet. But couldn't really reach in. He was not quite familiar of the fender tag and built sheet concept. I took a picture of the trunk that surprisingly did not have rust. But I can't find it in the camera. I'm going up next week if anyone wants anymore pic's.

The last picture is of a salvage yard that was closed and appears that it had a bunch of old cars - not sure if Mopars are in the bunch. I will see if I can stop by another day when the gates are open. All these finds are in the Grahamsville area in NY. Unbelievable how many in a small area in the boonies. Sorry for the long write up.

Great stories!
That Road Runner's a 72, BTW. I'd love to have it too...poor thing. :'(

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

10-4! Tin_Soldier. That's on route 52 right past Walden. If you live nearer, you should try to stop by. Who knows there might be a Mopar in the back. I saw a 67 Pustang in the front so maybe there is a Mopar sleeping in the back! It's worth a visit. I'm only up there in the weekends during hunting season.

I am only 1 hour from there.   I'll have go check it out soon.   The best part now is that I go t my wife looking for mopars in yards too.   So she gets one side of the road and I get the other.   Tell you what she has spotted more than me so far.   We travel all through NE and up statte NY.   That is our favorite spot of the USA.   There are other nice places but nothing like NE. for us anyways

I recognized those pics of the junkyard right away. I'm in the Town of Newburgh just a few miles off Rte. 52 & went to that yard when I moved here in 1989 looking for Satellite, Duster, or Scamp parts, but there's nothing in there for Mopar. There's a lot of 50's & 60's Chebbies & Fords, but I haven't been there since then. Some Mopar friends of mine who grew up around here all knew of that yard & said there's nothing there. You could stop & check, wouldn't hurt.

There's one guy, a friend of a friend, who moved to Grahamsville & is a walking service manual. He worked for a Chrysler dealer in the 70's & 80's & can almost quote service bulletins word for word, & diagnose problems before you finish your sentence. He had several Mopars over the years & still has a '69 Super Bee I've never seen. My friend said he & his father worked on it, had it painted & stuck it in their barn over 20 years ago. Now there's 3 to 4 inches of pigeon crap covering it.

It's a shame to waste them away like that.   ::)

I'm pretty sure 72 was the last year for six packs, but I'm sure there weren't many made that year, if so.
Sorry, I'm not too well versed on those cars...other than being able to spot the year from 100 yards away. ;D
I really like that body style though, too bad you weren't able to get a shot of the VIN tag.

That's an awesome body style in my opinion. I'm also not familiar with Road Runners. I can pictured that car painted Plum Purple just like a GTX!

I got a line on a red 71 or 72 RR.   My buddy (chevy guy) at work spotted "some Road Runner with Plymouth down the side" near his place in the sticks. I said, where!!!   So we took a drive at lunch time and found it.   It wasnt a Superbird, but a 71 or 72 with Plymouth on the side.   The sign on the driveway said NO TRESSPASSING so we didnt go in.   I'm gonna write the guy a letter since i now have his address.   We'll see what happens.

wow great story!  so I take it you never had no luck at hunting! ohwell at least you found some great mopars.  Cant wait to see the chick with the charger, hmm, 25 years old eh?  :icon_smile_big: :P
Yah I was looking for the 1970 roadrunner in the pics and when I seen it, I knew right away it was a 72, I like that year.  I love the 68 and 69 more but for the 70's the 72 would be my choice. The 72 was the last year for the 6 pack.  The shame of it is, that car will probally sit there for 6 more years and eventually sink into the mud and the whole under carriage and frame will rot away!  :'(  what  a waste!  seen that story far too many times.    done it a few times myself years ago before I knew better.

I went out scrounging this past weekend myself. On Friday the owner of the local junkyard asked if I knew who bought the '69 Charger R/T that was one street away. I never even heard of this car. He said it was something few knew about as it was kept inside for over 15 years. He said it sold for $4500 and was complete, but not running.

So I was bummed and went out. All I managed to find was a late 60's Barracuda nearby I hadn't noticed before. It was in good shape. Looks to be kept inside more often than not. Also found a 1969 Roadrunner or GTX carcass in a field. Looks like you had better luck!

Heres a pic of a junkyard I went to in Rotterdam NY last September. Its sad to look at, 2 of my favorite cars on top of each other. 67 Lemans conv and a 68 Charger. I counted about 7 or 8 2nd Gens in there.

Wow! that is sad to see a salad of old Mopars going to waste.

On the 72 RR it appeared like the father was willing to sell it since the son had lost interest and believes the car is going to be wasted, but the mother and son appear to be a real class act - if you know what I mean. The father appeared happy that I noticed it and was interested in the car. He mentioned many times on how hot the car was when he bought it in 74 and how fast it was. Again, I wished the camera was working to see the different options the car had. Like I said every line in the fender tag was filled with numbers and letters. Unless that's normal with 72 RR's - not sure.

IBsmokin - I did see six deer and one coyote chasing a doe. All the deer were doe's and all shots were beyond the 30 yard bow reach. As long as I see something I'm happy. Getting a deer is the bonus! I'm not worry, next week is opening for firearm season.  :icon_smile_big:

The road runner appears to be sitting for a while. Liberty plates went away about 4 years ago. I would tell the guy he may want to find out about those plates. There's an urban legend that the great state of New York will charge you$5.00 a day insurance if you don't surrender your plates, (unless he never registered it again). I don't know how true it is. Doesn't matter around here, non-american drivers from out of state running around here with no insurance.

69_500

In 72 the six pac wasn't an option that was listed to be available on  the cars. However there has always been a few cars that come the way that an option book say you can't have one. So yes there were some 72 cars with a 6 bbl on them, however it wasn't supposed to be an option in 72.

Yes, but they are very, VERY rare.  Leftovers from 71 that got put on 72s by mistake.

I spotted this RoadRunner today near Ballston Spa, not sure what year it is and there was no one around the house.

Looks like a 74 to me.  Could be wrong though.

I can't really tell the differnce from the 73 to the 74, but, either one, she is a real beauty!

Ghoste

I'm guessing by the size of the front bumper guards.

'CUDA360

My guess is '73

The '74s have those big seatbelts that hang straight down and I think you can see the passenger shoulder belt and it looks pretty thin

Maybe not

Maybe the original owner cut them down with a steak knife, who knows

Ghoste

Yeah, it's hard to tell though from that far away.  It also looks like it has that slightly indented grille that was unique to 74.  73 it went more or less straight across with a slight curve to the front.

Khyron

I know were there is a 74 RR in the area for sale for about $2400, not that nice, but solid, for the most part ;)

OUCH!  That 72 RR doesn't look like it will get any better.  Doubt it is a real six barrel car, but ya never know.   :P

There are many rotters around here, but most people are mean as hell.  I leave them a lone now since I don't have the $$$ to offer anyway.   :rotz:

Kind of can't blame the owners for not wanting to sell with all the morons they must have to deal with.  Plus most people just want them for nothing, claim to want to restore them, and have the for sale ad for double the $$$ in the paper before the car is even home.   ::)
