I am sure this topic has been beaten hundreds of times but I gotta ask. What is a good cam for a 318? It is all stock and was thinking about getting this package from summit http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CMB-03-0162&view=1&N=700+

After doing some reading I'm starting to think the Lunati cam might not be such a great idea? Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks

you look to have a 73 Dodge Charger...   If your engine is indeed all stock you'll be fighting a low 8.6:1 compression ratio...     the way to make power with this is to go very conservative on the cam...   less overlap allows for less cylinder bleed off...

Realize that this engine needs compression to really make power.

I was thinking about adding some 360 heads as well.

While the 360 heads have bigger valves and ports, they also have a larger combustion chamber which will further reduce your compression ratio.

In other words....stay away from them?

unless you plan on rebuilding the bottom end with different pistons...

If you're keeping the stock short block than yes - stay sway from the 360 heads...

Ok thanks. So here is what I have so far that I am going to order. Edelbrock Performer Dual plane intake, Holly avenger carb(670cfm), TTI headers, and this cam: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=LUN-60401

How does this look?

I like that package but would change the cam profile for something more conservative. What are the rear end gears ? Stock torque converter ?

I have 2.71 gears in the rear (Thanks 69CoronetRT ). And yes, it is a stock torque converter(Plan on getting a 2250 stall soon)

Personally, i would be looking to swap in some deeper gears long before upgrading the tq converter.  :yesnod:

Those 2.71's with a stock 318 will make the car feel very slow....a gearset will really wake it up. How tall are your back tires ? Taller tires only compound the problem by reducing the final drive ratio so that needs to be taken into account when picking gears.  :Twocents:

The back tires are 24".

Paul, any plans to go with a taller tire ? A set of 3.23-3.55 gears would be my choice.  :yesnod:

I am leaving the tires that it has now. I think they look good :yesnod:

This might be a stupid question......but where do I get the gear set? Exactly what do I have to order? Again, forgive me for the stupid questions. I'm not the most car savvy person. Im still learning!
