Is there a trick to removing the pitman arm from the steering linkage?  I know I need a pitman arm puller to remove it from the steering box,  but how do I get the arm free from the steering linkage?

You can either do it with something called a pickle fork or you could get a tool similar to the pitman arm puller.  The only difference with that is that the tie rod joint tool is taller and has arms that pivot, similar to a gear puller.

Or you can "squeeze" the taper pin out of its bore with a couple of large hammers.

With the nut removed, place a large ball peen on one side of the pin in the drag link as a backup and smack the opposite side with the other hammer, the hammer blow will distort the taper bore enough to squirt the tapered pin out. A couple of blows might be necessary.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I just used a tie rod puller, 7.00 Auto Zone.  :yesnod:
