Hey guys,
I was wondering how much a 8 3/4 peg leg 742 rearend would be worth?  :shruggy: A salvage yard by me wants $100 if I pull it.  Fortunatly the car is already up in the air so it wouldn't be that hard.
Thanks,
Scott

Also I was wonding if anyone knew if a 63 newport (that the rear is in) happens to be a B body or is it a C body like the later ones?  It seems smaller than the 70ish models.

I was also wondering if a limited slip from a 741 case will work in the 742?

Yes on the sure grip question....well kinda
A lot of people on the webboards hack on the 741 that it is too weak but most agree that it is hard to break it in a mild street application. So if you have a nice strong small block street car you will be hard pressed to bust this pumpkin. Sure grips found in these rears can be swapped into other housings as long as you take the carrier bearing and races with you (as they are different). SG's themselves are all the same except for the clutch and cone type units.
Info: 1 3/8 Pinion
Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Thanks alot for the info.  It looks like I'll be heading over to the yard this week to get some bloody knuckles :smilielol:  From what I've read (maybe incorrectly) is that the 741 is more difficult to rebuild.  I have 3.23's now and would like to go with 3.55 or 3.73's.  Future plans call for a 5.7 or 6.1 ltr to go along with the 833od that will be going in.

From what I understand ... it's the cone style sure grip unit that is more involved to rebuild but it can be done. Clutch style is the more desirable one.  I don't know why the case would be much different from rebuilding the 742 or 489.  Here's some more info that might help.

On another note. The 741 will take mild street punishment but if you are going for a high horse build in the future, you might just want to stuff a 742 or 489 in right now.  I'd still grab the yard chunk though.  Never turn down an 8.75 pig for $100.

Holy Cow :2thumbs:  You are the man.  Thanks alot for all the info on the Pig.  Its been very helpful for what to do in the future.  I think I'll have to do some more searching in the yard for more pigs besides the one I'll snag.  The only problem is that most of the possible choices are buried up to their frames in mud, all the more fun I guess.
