Just want to know what the propper points gap should be for 68 383 single point ignition? I have a brand new distributer i want to put in my 68 Charger, it's not converted over to electronic, but the new points need to be gapped and i have know idea what the spec is. I bought a Pertronix conversion kit but summit sent me the wrong kit (they said i must have ordered the wrong one but i don't think i did and it was to late to send it back) so rather than buy another kit i bought new points and condensor to throw in it, i dunno how much longer the car is gonna be on the road before i yank it off to restore so for now i don't wanna spend a ton of money on it, i'm sure i will be spending enough later lol. Thanks for the help.

Gap is 0.017" and dwell is 30 degrees.

Dwell?? Forgive me but i have no idea how to set that or even what exactly it means. I have electronic ignition in my other cars, i've never messed with the points stuff before.

Dwell is the number of degrees of distributor rotation while the points are in the closed position.  It is checked using a dwell meter, and is a check of the accuracy of your point gap.   The coil windings are being saturated with electricity while the points are in the closed (dwell) position.  If you don't have a dwell meter, just be sure to do a good job of adjusting point gap.  Set the gap at the high point of the cam lobe, and be sure that the feeler gauge is flat (parallel) with the 2 surfaces of the points.  If the gauge is cocked, the gap and dwell will be off.  Also be sure to apply a light film of distributor cam lube to help keep the points at the proper gap.  Good luck!
