The previous owner spray painted them black and it is now chiping away.

Is there a special trick to getting the paint off and making it white again?

i don't think you can get the paint off vinyl, it would be chaeper to get new ones since they make them for your car

trying to re-dye white over a darker color would require alot of coats i would think

if its flaking off bad ! good chance the guy never used the propper stuff ... where eye protection , & try  using compressed air & a blow gun with a fine nozel ....  might be in luck ..could all come off ! don't be tempted to paint strip it or soat it with thinners  ...thats a no no on plastics .

WHEW... You saved me. I was like 3 seconds from whiping it down in thinner. But i did in fact use the compressed air and it worked fine.
