Help identifying alternator wires (pics)

I've been having charging problems it seems like forever now, however I haven't really had time to work on the car until recently. Anyway, today I pulled off the alt to have it tested and it failed. It's a 2-field alternator but when I was pulling it off, I noticed one of the wires was just plugged to the back of a screw coming out of the alt. Can anyone tell me which wire is which? The motor is out of a 72 new yorker as well as the electronic ignition system.

The blue wire and green wire I'm assuming just plug back into the field terminals. But what about the other two? The one with the boot on it was the wire that was plugged to just the screw on the alt. And the other wire has both a purple and black wire connected to the terminal which confused me as to why that would be the "hot" source for the alt.

BTW After I get a new alternator I plan on running 4gauge wire with a fusible link between the starter and alt.

Thank You for any help in advance.

2 field push-on's, alt hot that goes to the threaded stud and the one with the right angle boot goes to the temperature sending unit.
