A locker is a pretty serious piece for the street and certainly no cheaper than a limited slip.  The Detroit Locker was available in Fords back in the day and even a huge number of the Ford guys didn't use them if they were mainly street driven cars.
If money is going to be that tight, then you will likely be stuck with an open differential and if it is seeing a lot of street use, there is nothing wrong with that.  If you plan to put some serious power down and you want to use it, then you are going to have to buck and get a limited slip of some kind.  There are a couple of different version of limited slip that wore the "Sure Grip" name and AUburn is remaking the cone style ones.  Even though not as good as the clutch style ones in some regards, they are still a little less money and may end up being your best choice.
