Odd Vacuum Canister

I am 1/2 way done with converting my late 440 "backwards" water pump housing and incorrect radiator project on my 1971 Super Bee.

Believe it or not, I never noticed a vacuum cannister under my battery tray.  This is not a large one like on my 1968 Charger, which holds vacuum reserve for the hidden headlights, about 1/2 that size.  It's not connected to anything, and I started to wonder why it was there, or if it was original or not.

The "SE style" headlights were electric, not vacuum. So that eliminates that possibility, and I believe the rare washer option was electic too. But what would that vacuum canister possibly be for?

Is your car equipped with A/C ?  I know a 70 charger I restored used a smaller vac can to use on the A/C Evaporator assembly.

Hmm, yes its an air car.  Compressor is on belts but the system is empty and never worked since I owned the car.  Maybe that is it....going to check the shop manual on the AC.

Does your car have an air grabber hood?   My buddy has a '70 Road Runner with an air grabber hood, and it has a small vacuum canister located on the firewall on the passenger side.

I have a 70 Charger which has electric headlight doors and it still has a vacuum canister.  It's purpose on an electric headlight door car is to power the heater control vacuum selinoids.  So, even if your car has electric headlight doors it probably originally had a vacuum canister somewhere.

Not a charcoal canister for the emission control system is it?

It is part of your A/C system. Check your factory manual.

Bingo.
On the 71 Charger's with A/C the doors in the duct work that control and direct the air flow are all controlled by air from a vacuum supply. if you look at the back side of your heater, defroster, A/C control you will see that there are a multitude of vacuum lines that run to the control doors in the duct work.
