Anyone know the part number for the soft rubber gaskets, or how do I ask for them at the counter? I just picked up rubber felpro 'Hardgaskets'. from the local store and they are leaking like a sonavabitch.
They are made of some stiff rubber or plastic, not what Im used to.

I don't know, but when my local dealer told me 1 440 head bolt was 22.00 then 3 days later when I came back to pick it up told me it would also be 4 months, I kinda stopped even checking with them. This was after the 369.00 fuel rail (for my beater) or the fact that the O rings for the injectors were 12.00.......each as in X 12 (big and small) (6.00 complete set, Autozone) Anyway I know it's "them" not all parts dept. are that way. But my "Good ol boys" ain't wearing "White Hats" in my book. You don't have to hit me to keep me from coming back! In their world those gaskets would be 155.00 and take 4 months to come in  :smilielol:

Cork Gaskets all the way!
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

I just installed a set of the Felpro VS 50145 R.  Don't know if they're the same as yours but I didn't have any problems.  Work great for me taking off and reusing.  The rubber one always seemed to swell up then not fit and the cork tearing.

Rick bought ALL of the remaining Chrysler inventory.
If you want those orange silicone gaskets, you gotta get them from Rick off ebay.   (FYI:  this is called capitalism).

Cork is the only thing to use on a survivor or correct resto.

I always seemed to have trouble with cork too.

Well I got the rubber ones and I still have massive leak at the rear lower corner. I cleaned the surface good and the valve covers seem pretty straight.
I hate to use silcon or permatex but Im thinking that might be my next step. What are the chances of that even working.

Should I try cleaning the surface of the head more?

Heath, clean both surfaces well and use ultra copper to glue the gasket to the valvecover. Let it set up overnight and cure. No RTV on the underside of the gasket. Tighten the bolts from the center out in a criss cross pattern just like the cylinder head finishing with the end bolts. If the valvecovers rails are straight it will seal up.

Don't overtorque the bolts.  ;)

Ive NEVER had a leaky valve cover with cork gaskets! The key is to have a flat unwarped surface at the head and the valve cover. I always glue the gasket to the cover, that way it stays in place while you install the cover and if you need to remove the cover too.


Rubber gaskets are just too slippery and dont compress where the need to like cork does. IMO.

the rubber ones do work fine - the problem is they do not fit the valve cover correctly - they need to be trimmed before you install them.

The cork gets burnt up by headers / manifolds along the lower edge of the valve cover.
There's ways around it but try to reuse a cork gasket or scrape off the old junk...  it's a waste of my time.

If somebody else wants to use them fine.   I don't use the rubber anymore either.   I like the steel core stuff.   On and off several times no leaks - Life is good.

Anyone use the exhaust gaskets with the "heat shield" that comes up the top? That's suppose to protect the gasket  :shruggy:

I agree that for Headers and and for lots of driving the cork is not the most durable...just saying what is correct for people that want correct.

Yes.    Those work well for most applications.   They're factory correct on '78s  :icon_smile_big:   It's a reasonable compromise for me but I'm not trying to do factory resto.

Rick bought most all of those from Chrysler also.   He sells them on ebay or you can source Fel-pro MS90425.   http://www.rockauto.com/dbphp/prt,6,MS90425

Tried once with the ultra copper just on one side and it leaked, so I tried both sides a a little bit on the head. Seems to have stopped the leak. Thanks everyone.

I'am thinking that the cork would work well with stock iron heads and stock valve covers and installed per above posts.  I'am using fabricated aluminum covers and aftermarket aluminum heads so I went with the Moroso steel core rubber gaskets.  They are blue and kind of pricy at $50.  Leastways, I think that's what I paid.  But I wanted the steel core so they would retain their shape since both surfaces are just milled flat in my case.  The stock valve cover has a lip all the way around to help retain the valve cover gasket.  Not sure if the Moroso's would work with the stock cover anyway.
