Hey guys, I'm about to pull the tranny out of my Charger but transmission jacks seem to be a little on the expensive side right now.  Do I need a transmission jack or will a 2 ton floor jack, some 2x4s and some luck work?  I really don't want to screw up the tranny so any help is appreciated.    Thanks guys. :2thumbs:

its a heavy SOB but you can get it done, i made the mistake of adding weight from my GV before trying to put it back in with a floor jack, it would help to also have a 2X4 and jack under the engine oil pan to keep the block from tilting back and binding the tranny while trying to take it out. you do have to get the car WAY up in the air to clear the top of the bell housing though

If your sons name is Bam Bam you got it made.  Floor jack and a helper will work.

Automatic or manual?

Autos are heavy and bulky but it can be done....a manual tranny will be much easier.

cpthowdy1369

It's an automatic.  Thanks for the tip about the 2x4 under the engine, I probably wouldn't have thought of that until it was to late.  Now I guess I need to go out and find some friends somewhere.  Maybe I can give the guys under the bridge downtown a couple of sandwitches to take the tranny out for me.

You haven't lived until you've put a 61 and earlier cast iron Torqueflite in by yourself. :eek2:

Use an atv/motorcycle jack if you have one!!!

71charger_fan

I r&r'd a 727 in my Charger by myself with no jack and no lift either. I wouldn't recommend it and I'd never try it again.

I've pulled several autos and manuals, never with the luxury of a transmission jack. Always just balanced it on a floor jack with the help of a friend. I've smashed several fingers over the years.

Actually going to do a clutch replacement on a buddy's car this weekend. Not looking forward to it.

I use a C -clamp on the bellhousing to keep the converter from falling out.

If you have a a drain plug on the converter that will drop about 10 lbs of fluid.

Dodge Don

I bought a tranny lift attachment for my floor jack. Just unscrew the round floor jack pad and screw on the tranny lift (has a cradle and chains to secure the tranny). Adjusts angles as well to help installation to engine. Looks like this one.
