NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Bracing themselves on a rolling warship in choppy seas, U.S. Navy snipers fired three flawless shots to kill a trio of Somali pirates and free the American sea captain being held at gunpoint, a Navy commander said Monday.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Good for them!  Shoulda happened sooner though. Should have smoked the boat when the Capt jumped in the water.

I was not there so I did not know the situation, but I was surprised it took them so long to do it. But from the article I read a few days ago the administration was trying to negotiate a "peaceful" ending to the crisis. God bless the Seals for getting the job done.

I think we are going to start to see more of this stuff as this is becoming a bigger problem.  I mean, come on you dumb ass pirates.   :slap: :rotz: We are on to you so take what you want and get out.  Where are you going to go with a ship ?  It's like painting yourself in a corner.   :slap:  I hope that we start a policy that we just sink the ships because as this gets worse I think that the pirates will just start killing the crews.

The ending was peaceful. ;) Only one tracer shot and three shots by the Seals; that's about as peaceful as it was going to get in my book.

They don't want the ship as much as they want a good reason make a ransom demand.
The big problem is that they've been successful in the past - someone paid the ransom - so they keep doing it.
There are stories of pirates hijacking small fishing boats and sending ransom demands to the fishermen's families. You don't get rich, but it might get you fuel for the next job....

Maybe this latest incident will slow them down a bit (I hope so), but more than likely, they'll just be more certain of the flag under which the ship is sailing.

It's probably a lot of bluster. They have to think now that they may die or spend their lives in a US prison. I certainly hope the guy that was captured is tried in the US and not turned over to Kenya where he could possibly get off.

Been following it since the start and just knew that would be the end result.  Can you picture those Navy Warriors right there on the fantail laying in wait for hours stretching into days, never moving, just waiting for the command.  I could, and was damn proud when they blew those MF's away and freed  the Captain, who is also a hero in my book.  He did the right thing, as he was supposed to, and that is make every attempt to escape!  He could have easily been killed, although those pirates weren't going to kill him at that point for obvious reasons.  They're pirates and they want money/booty unlike the scum we are fighting over there in you know where.
Awesome, is all I can say! Simply Awesome!!!
I read the other story too about the revenge, etc....
They don't even want to go there!

Damned straight Bull.  If they want to negotiate with these pirates, send an "envoy" of ground attack aircraft equipped with laser seaking treaties and they'll have peace in no time.  It worked in Libya and if some of the current hotspots hadn't existed for so long next door to the USSR, something could have been done there too way back when it was possible.  The news said tonight that there were at least 17 other ships with a total of 200 sailors being held captive. The news said that since this politicized incident has unfolded that at least 4 other ships had been taken over by (possible) Somalian pirates. Makes one wonder what else is happening on our Earth that we should, and don't even know about.

Respect for SEALS just like any other SOCOM or MARSOC unit but they do things completely out of their training...    beachead security, underwater demo, and basic recon...    SEALS today are high school jocks who are not trained to do every job they are given...  (I am against the fact you can go down to a Navy recruiter and sign a paper garanteeing BUDs after you pass basic with a certain PT score)    they believe their own hype...     which makes them take missions that they have no business doing...

Again - no disrespect intended - but overall their skill set and training is the limiting factor - they are great at what they do - but like ever other SOCOM unit - what they do is limited.

Obama isn't personally getting any more praise for killing pirates than GWB personally got for killing Al Qaida & Iraqi insurgents.  (What would you guys be saying if Obama had donned a flight uniform & landed on the deck of the carrier near the pirate action?)

----------------------------------

I wish the military was allowed to do this kind of stuff more often.  The US gets crapped on whenever we take any action at the country-to-country level, but the world is full of small time criminal operations that we could be easily demolishing.  It would be a way to periodically flex some military muscle, in plain sight of the world, without incurring much international relations damage in the process.

This should help.  It's a character played by my man kiefer sutherland.  I've never watched the show either but it's very popular.  I don't like the fact that they are trying to "Norrisize" the Bauer character though.  Chuck is real and can do everything listed in the facts about him, it's all true.  AND YES, he's so fast he can run around the world and punch himself in the back of the head.  Kiefer can just jump into christmas trees drunk.  Very funny but not very effective when fighting bad guys.  Unless of course they die laughing.

So, in essence, you're saying a group of poorly-trained Navy soldiers can hand a group of seasoned pirates their own a$$e$ in a matter of seconds without breaking a sweat?

mikepmcs

YUP!

Also RT, your Marine friend is a little  mislead and it's a typical attitude due to the spirited rivalry between Marines and Sailors.  BUD/S(Basic Underwater Demolition Training/SEAL) is not just any course that anyone can get through or get in.  The PT test on paper looks innocent enough but to be competitive to get in, the numbers are outrageous physically.  Their hype is warranted and they are taught to give a beating as they can surely take one.   I've actually had the pleasure of transporting some SEAL Team members over the years in the P-3 and had them as instructors on a couple occasions for a couple schools I volunteered for and they are hands down some very well trained Sailors/Warriors who put their lives in harms way on a regular basis.(i actually have a very funny story about some ground transport i did for them as well) They kick ass and take names anywhere they go.  Yes, any mistake that is made is amplified 10 fold but the stuff they do that we never know about on a daily basis is to be respected, revered, and thankful for, just like any man/woman in the US Military no matter what their job is, but a NAVY SEAL gets my ultimate respect.
I could go on and on but......
Here is a glimpse of BUD/S and remember this is what is available on the web.
http://www.navybuds.com/

and in case you don't want to read the whole article, these are just some of the core skills:
- Sniper
- Breacher
- Surreptitious Entry
- Electronic and Media Exploitation
- Technical Surveillance
- High Threat Protective Security (PSD)
- Advanced Weapons Training
- Advanced Driving Skills (Urban/Rural/Security)
- Advanced Climbing/Rope Skills
- Advanced Air Operations: HAHO/Jumpmaster/Parachute Rigger and Packer
- Ranger School (U.S. Army)
- Diving Supervisor
- Range Safety Officer
- Instructor School
- Leadership School
- Foreign Weapons
- Explosive Ordinance Disposal
- UAV Operator
- Language School
- Advanced Special Operations

That is just the % of the time that is spent on land, majority is spent in the water.

Very well trained, very well prepared for any situation, and very well would most likely kick your RECON buddies butt in a bar fight.

A Seal is just a wannabe Marine that could not handle our 13 week Bootcamp Vs. the Navy's 8 week training.  Lets face it, since the dawn of time when ships would engage one another, eventually the two ships would tie up and the real fighting began.  It was not sailors who fought hand to hand Combat BUT the MARINES.  Sailors are Sailors and Marines are....The enemies worst nighmare.

i work with an ex marine so don't give me that crap

army boot is 8 wks like navy boot, the reason the marine boot is longer isthat it takes them more time to learn the same stuff and they don't learn anything after that where as the other services have to go learn their actual job skill in ADDITION to the basic stuff they already learned 5 weeks earlier than the marines

Marines are the only ones you could throw sand on a brickwall and say "Hit the Beach" and they would run right into it!!

My buddy is a Para-rescue Jumper in the USAF...    you want to talk a training cycle ?  haha

PJ Prep = 2 weeks
Indoc = 10 weeks
Jump school = 3 weeks
Dive School = 6 weeks
Emergency egress = 1 day
SERE = 2.5 weeks
HALO = 5 weeks
Medical / EMT = 22 weeks
Pararescue Training = 24 weeks

That for a whopping grand total of ~75 weeks of training....     1 year, 5 months, 14 days...       Hooah?

All after 8 weeks of basic

Again - nothing against SEALS but all they have to know is tactical skills...    people like PJs and CCTs also need to know technical skills (radio communications, math based calculations, or medical) ....      I find it sad that we never hear about these men - all we hear is about SEALS...      hollywood limelight i'm sure...     oh well.

Anyway - props to the armed services as a whole!
