Nice original picture. :yesnod:  Yes they do, maybe that was the start of the Dukes push bar craze?  Evolution?
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Maybe they were the prequel to the mid-late '69 large front guards :scratchchin:

There was a thread with that picture in it. I think it was decided that it's some kind of aftermarket crap from years ago. Like JC Whitney or something.
Still looking for 15x7 Appliance slotted mags.....

Look like they came off a Cadillac to me :hah:

You know, some of these replys kinda offended me alittle, talking about the stuff back then looks stupid, well it's not more then what is around today that are stupid. The stuff back then looks more better then the stuff does today! Now days the dang cars doesn't have any dang style at all and they all look the same as while. Back in the day at least folks and the cars had style unlike now days. I may not have been around back in around that time frame but I like it more then I do stuff now days. Back then folks didn't compalin alot and was thankful for stuff.

I think that car looks nice, and with the charger having muscle lines those things are like muslce lines up in front as while not just down the sides of the car. Those things kinda looks like the charger had fangs.

If I remember right, they didn't cut the push bar at all. They just bolted it on the charger. Maybe kickgas can shime in here on this.

I agree Jum, I, myself like bumper guards, I think that when applied right, they can give the car a menacing look, I guess it all really boils down to what your opinion is.. But please keep in mind that this is a public place, and opinions are being spoken. :2thumbs:

I prefer bumper guards on the back only. A grille should be clean and uninterrupted. :Twocents:

Wow!  :scratchchin:
I thought this all covered back in the "When was the last time You Saw a Charger in the Wild" thread which was where I posted both the old photos from the YENKO Supercar Registry... just a couple Mos. ago.
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,49500.420.html
They are simply aftermarket truck guards as has been pointed out, perhaps the charger was used as a push car at the drags or whatever...  :shruggy:
The late batch of '69 Special Edition Chargers had the larger bumperettes like mine...
It took me some amount of trouble to find replacments for mine after my clip was crunched in 1999.

I've looked and I've never seen them on anything other then Special Editions though they are not specificly listed as an S.E. Item,..
My thought is/was they were a replacment item from the vendor once the original batch of small style bumper guards were depleted...
And I like them too, they do kinda' look like fangs and do offer a bit more protection for the "I" piece...
I am aware some folks like the wide open Harmonica in the mouth look, but these are only our personal opinions...
Cause I don't care for the General Lee Ford truck push bar look, I don't care how much protection it affords..

Neal_J

Interesting discussion.  Mine too is a late 1969 car (build date was 7/3) and has the larger bumber guards like Dave's.  Curious.  It sounds like you got whatever the line worker grabbed outta the bin, maybe?

My guess is that the large bumper guards were an aftermarket add on either by the owner or the dealership.

I don't like the look of oversized bumper guards on anything since they usually ruin the lines of the car. I remember a lot of what aftermarket crap was available, & things like side mirrors, bumper guards, fender skirts, windshield visors, continental kits, & more, were available for just about any car sold. It's like that today when you see all the garbage people put on their vehicles. Just because it's available doesn't mean you should get it.....LOL

Some that have had the rubber pads designed into the car's overall design look good. The rear pads on the 1970 Chevelles, & the front pads on the 1970 Road Runners are two that come to mind.

And Brock, that push bar up front doesn't give you the protection one might think. As a brush guard, yes, it will since brush is usually something that's bendable & that was the intention behind the design. Low MPH accidents that will normally mangle your just the front bumper, will now destroy your hood, your grille, all the trim, the valance, the grille support, the hood latch assembly, & whatever else is attached & behind it all.

One of my friends worked in a shop doing Mercedes & Land Rover repairs & said he'd try to talk people out of adding the that thing to the front of their Land Rover for just that reason. Bumper replacement from a small accident at the mall turns into thousands of dollars in body work because of a push bar.
