Hello,

I have my body stripped to bare metal and all of the sheet metal and bodywork done. I want to epoxy primer the shell. I have checked my options and Dupont has a solution which will cost 350 but Nason (Dupont second line) can do the same job for 150. I talked with the bodyshop partsguy and he did not seem to know anything more than me. I was told the Nason line is the same as the older paints which I have a few paint jobs running around after 15 years. Do I spend the extra bucks or is it a cash grab?

Any other recommendations?

Because I want to paint the car with PPG paint I will be going with DP50LF as my epoxy primer and use PPG products throughout the process. It was recommended to use Concept paint by PPG due to flow out and gloss. The color is SS1.

How close is the color of DP50LF (Grey) to the factory color used on the bottom of the 68 Dodges? Is there anything I can do to get the color closer, perhaps mix in some black or white DP to lighten or darken? Does anybody have any pictures of the true factory color?

Does 400 bucks Canadian a gallon seem high for the DP50, activator and reducer? Seems a bit on the high side to me! Lordco in town here is known for high prices! The paint will be 300 bucks a gallon.

With yellow you will want to be very careful with singe stage, yellow covers terrible and single stage tends to flow away from edges and peaks. This leaves the edges thin and VERY easy to buff through..If it were me i would use concept single stage but I would cocktail it with clear and then 2 coats of just clear too.

Thanks Brian,

If I would cocktail the clear with the base how much of each would a person use? If this is the case would it be better just to start with a base clear system? I know for painting that would be easier for a rookie like myself! It was also suggested to use a white sealer prior to painting the yellow.

The white sealer wont really help alot with coverage but it will make the yellow look less pale.

As for the cocktail deal. It would be easier(and cheaper)to use base clear instead of single stage and clear,BUT the depth you get with the singe stage and gradual clear is awesome. Its almost like the look of Lacquer but alot more durable..

Sounds good so if I understand correctly, I would shoot the base color and then add a certain amount of clear in with the base on the last coat? What would be the ratio? Then after that has flashed off, add a couple more coats of clear?

It almost sounds like the base clear is still easier way to go!

You can cocktail it to any ratio you want.

I did one in panther pink once ,and this is how we did it.

1.sealer

2.2 VERY even coats of color....Whatever you need for even color coverage

3. half and half (equal parts color and clear)

4. 25% color and 75% clear

5. 2 coats regular straight up clear.

It still looks a mile deep many years later.  :2thumbs:

I picked up my DP50LF epoxy primer today. I picked up a gallon to start but am not sure how far this will go. I am hoping it is enough to prime the outside of the shell and the bottom of the car. No doors, hood, trunk or valences. After this is sealed up I am going to leave this part and prepare the rest of the parts and get them sealed, on the car and adjusted. Then I will hit the car with a hi build primer surfacer, I believe this is K38, prior to final blocking so I can block across the panels and get a better fit.

I did ask the fellow at the paint supply shop how much clear could be added to the PPG Concept paint and he said up to 10%. Has anybody ever used this product and can they confirm this? The procedure Brian used above sounds very good to me.
