2 ques. on a 318

I was wondering if I took a die grinder or file and smoothed the exhaust ports on a set of stock heads if it would help the exh. flow. What I mean to do is just smooth the edges. Also, I know Beer's motor is awesome, but I was wondering how the same setup excluding the aluminum heads would work. In terms of horsepower/torque. I was thinking of just having my heads ported,3 angle valve(?) job and maybe different valves. I have to work with what I have and that is an extra '75 318. I know I could go big block but $$ is limited for my toy. Thanks for any help or thoughts.

Well if $$ are limited don't spend any money on the 318. It cost more money to get the same power as a big block motor. Really, get maybe a 400 off e-bay,they go cheap and it make more power cheaper that that 318. Once you start then it too late to change , intake, exhaust headers, dist. its all different and won't work on a 400. 440's are better but cost more and are harder to find a good one. 400 are dirt cheap.

Thanks for the reply. I know a 440 or even a 400 would be a better candidate for power but, a 318 is all I have to work with for now.

Well then gear it up. 3.55 gears will work great, maybe 3.21 if you are on the freeway alot. I have 3.91 in my car but I did throw a rod on the freeway a few years ago. Looking back now I would have saved money with a big block motor thats why I said something.

Use no bigger than a 600 cfm carb on a low rise dual plane intake with a small performance cam like Edelbrocks Performer Plus #2177.  Do a 3 angle valve job, blend a little in the bowl area and match the ports to the gaskets.
Finishing it up with dual exhaust should get you the most bang for the buck.

Thanks for the info. I have headers,duals w/Flows on it now. I was just wondering about head work. Given the motor is original and running well, would head work maybe blow the rings? I did this on another car many years ago is why I'm asking. I had the heads rebuilt and two weeks later the rings went. Thanks again for the info on carb,cam and intake.

No, a good valve job won't blow your rings.  The two aren't related.

Maybe when the heads were off some junk fell in to the holes?? O maybe the timing was then set to far advance if you pulled the dist. and damage the rings by pinging to much. Some junk may have gotten in to the intake manifold.

if the heads were not sealing well & get rebuilt & the rings are tired it is possible to increase the cylinder pressure with the rebuilt heads & finish off a set of tired rings in an engine , I would do a wet & dry compression test to see what condition the rings seem to be in now

I know everybody want yuo to go big block, but concider this, big blocks dont just interchange. motor mounts are different,bell housings are different as well as the radiatorthen if you have anything hanging on the water pump, like powersteering you are SOL. so keep it small, 318"s are fun and can produce some serious torq. cheeply I might add. http://www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/mopar/0667em_mopar_318_engine/

use some Magnum heads. flow way better than X-heads and are cheap. from 91-02 they are all the same, 5.2-5.9l
