I was being generic, everyone calls them Magnum 500 anymore it seems almost no matter what they were called even at the different car makers that used them.
If I'm not mistaken, aren't they only correctly called Magnum 500's if they were sold as aftermarket wheels?  Did any of the car companies that used it call it that?

What????:shruggy:

What I mean is, that Motor Wheel Co made them and when they sold them at your local speed shop, that center cap had crossed flags (IIRC) and said Magnum 500 on it.  That was how they sold them.  They were also supplied to all of the Big Three and sold that way with various names.  For example, Chrysler referred to them as "Road Wheels".  Ford may have called them Magnums, I'm not sure.  I may be wrong, but off the top of my head, I'm not aware of any factory Chrysler literature ever calling them Magnum 500 wheels.  They changed a little over the years, for example as Chris mentioned, in 1969 they got a trim ring added to them.  A little later on, the spokes became painted I think (or maybe that was just the AMC application?).
Anyway, a common wheel that has become known by one name.

As far as I know the up to '68 all chrome wheel was referred to as the Magnum 500 and the '69 & later trim ring style was referred to as the Road Wheel.

Shawn, I think Ford called the all chrome version the Magnum 500 as well :shruggy:

I can't find anything prior to 69 that refers to them as anything other than chrome plated road wheels.  Do you have a source that indicates differently Chris?
And yeah, I don't know for sure what Ford or AMC called them.  GM either for that matter but I'm pretty sure GM didn't call them Magnums.

Straight from the 1969 AMC AMX Dealer Book:

"Mag-Styled" steel wheels with chrome trim ring and painted spider.
This pic was included too.

I think the center decal changes through the different automakers, but yeah they're pretty universal.

Ive got a set of 500s I picked up a few days ago and the outer part of the wheel was painted black behind the trim rings. Did any of them come painted from the factory? Ive never seen any, but I didnt know if maybe some besides Chrysler may have been painted.

I have to stick by calling them all "road wheels".  Not being argumentative so much as being anal, but from the 67 and 68 dealer data guides...

richard pettys 73

you know i think i actually got some rims like those too.....that is probably where they came from
