Blown starter relay

I was starting my car today and noticed a nice size spark from the negitive batt. terminal. (believe it was the neg. one) And then heard the one click that I know is the starter relay when turning the key. I replaced the relay before and it worked until now. What could cause this? I replaced the battery, voltage regulator, coil, dist. cap and rotor, starter itself and the relay with in the last year. The battery has a higher CCA than the old one. What would cause the starter relay to short out?

Have you performed a voltage drop test across the pos and neg battery cables?

There should be no sparking at your battery post...that's a sign it's not making good contact. I'd start right there and check all ground straps on the car first, clean them up and tighten them down.Good luck

The smaller wire coming out of the neg. cable was broken with wire exposed and broke in several places. I installed a new cable with the smaller wire and a new relay. Should this solve my problem?

That could do it. Needs a good solid ground.

Inspect the rest of the wiring and give it a shot.
