What the hell is up with gym locker rooms?

Just wanting to see if anyone can shed some light on this stuff for me. I have been working out at gyms for about 15 years, probably about 5-7 diff gyms over that time. They have all been the same where this stuff is concerned. Why is it that dudes stay naked for so damn long and run around? They brush their teeth, fix their hair, talk to friends, etc.. Bare ass naked!!!! Why do they think we want to see that? Plus some of these locker rooms are small so they are in close proximity. And for the life of me I cant understand why someone needs to shave naked. Razor, shaving cream the whole bit. Why is shaving so damn important that you have to do it on your lunch hour and you have to do it naked? Another even weirder thing, a lot of people blow dry their pubes!!! What is that about?!?!?! They will either use a hair dryer, a fan, or point the hand dryers down there. Am I missing something here? Last thing, why in the hell do people still wear jock straps? I cant understand why anyone ever did in the first place, but especially these days. What is the point of these things? Why do you want to wear something that has no ass in it? A snug pair of briefs or boxer briefs will provide the same support for your junk. Please help me solve these mysteries.

Hmm, lets see if we can clear up some of these questions.

1. Perhaps the guys who walk around bare-ass have guy-guy issues. Or they like how they look naked so.... Probably the latter.

2. Shaving naked...see above.

3. Blow dry pubes...uh uh, don't want to go near that. Have not seen it (where do you live?).

4. Jock straps are a definite throwback...the only reason to wear one is to use a cup, and the only activity a gym would have where you may need it is racketball. Other than that see #1.

For the record the only time I parade around in my birthday suit in the locker room is going to the shower. And sandals are mandatory.

 Its been about ten years since I worked out in Gyms (I exercise at home now) so I don't have a feel for what is currently going on in gym dressing rooms, but when I did attend gyms I remember almost everyone of us would cover ourselves with a towel from the waist down while shaving, combing hair, etc. 
The behavior that you spoke of seems a little weird to me.  I think I'd be looking for a different place to workout.

Yup...I've seen that behaviour, and I agree...it's just plain weird.
I like privacy, so I work out during the low times at the gym I go to.
Usually, I'm the only guy there. Perfect.

I worked in a few different gyms for about 3 years. I did see some of what you're talking about. I'm comfortable with who I am, and still try to stay naked as little as possible. A friend of mine who was also a trainer, is guilty of a few of these things, always naked, would shave his whole body, and would blow dry himself, among a few other questionable things. I really have no explanation other than possible gay/bisexual tendencies. I'm not uncomfortable about the gay/bi thing, doesn't matter to me. However I will say making people uncomfortable is probably not the best way to get people to accept you and your group.

Yeah, the old guy is a BIG offender in this. From what my wife and other females tell me, I guess this type of behavior is pretty prevalent in the girl's locker room as well. I guess that is just how some people roll. Still weird to me. The junior high and high school showers seem like a weird deal to me to. They basically just throw you in a big room with a bunch of naked dudes!!! Why couldnt we have our own damn shower stalls or something? At least partitions or dividers or something. Always made me feel like I was in prison or a head of cattle or something.

Unfortunatey, every gym I have been to is like that. Gold's, World Gym, Balley's, 24 hour Fitness. I guess it is just the nature of some members of the workout crowd. Like I said in my thread above, I guess they have similar problems in the girl's locker room. However, I dont find that to be so weird or unappealing.

Jock straps help provide support for "the boys" so that they do not hang too low and cause stretching of the spermatic cords causing pain in "the boys".  I have no problem with people keeping "the boys" in check because a jock strap does it better than briefs or other clothes.  The prancing around naked would bother me...

I noticed the same thing at just about every gym I've ever worked out in.

My theory on it is this. Most guys aren't that uncomfortable naked. Thinking back to HS and JR HS it was a bit weird to always have to stand at the showers amongst 15-20 other guys who were all showering. Especially in HS when the shower was a giant circle so you were looking at someone no matter what direction you tried to face.

heres one . the company i used to work for had to do an open remodel " meaning doing work while the pace is still open " at a uppide gym the oxford club . the walls had to be redone in the shower room because the metal rusted away over the years .

anyway 2 of our carpenters were there for a week or so doing the repairs . they said it was a nightmare because while they were working these naked guys would stand there and watch them work and talk to them all friggn day long . they said the funniest thing was the gym had a leather couch in the locker room and these guys would just sit the BSing to one another naked .

now why in gods name would you put a leather couch in a locker room , let alone sit naked one it in some other dudes a$$ & ball sweat riddn leather seat ?

Being naked never bothered me. I'm comfortable in my sexuality. Not that I care to sit and watch anyone blow dry their ass, but if you're going to a place where men or women for that matter get all sweaty after a workout, you should expext to see someone naked. If it bothers you that much, I'd find another gym or you might want to invest in a weight machine for home.

Of course I only go in the locker room to put my jacket in there if it's a cold day.  I live about 3 miles from the gym so I just go home to clean up.

Old dudes have no shame doing that. I think they would walk out of the locker room and leave naked if they could.
Once again, what is the urgency of shaving at that point, especially naked? Can you not shave when you get home? Or the next morning?
