i just found out my dad left my aspen outside under a tree in the rain and 50 mph winds in pa. i can not get it into the open garage because my yard is all mud. i hope the tree does not fall down  but i just lost cable. this sucks.

I figured a 34 x 64 would be plenty big. But like someone else said earlier it's never big enough. Maybe it's time to add another 36' on the end. That would give me room for a paint booth and a lift.

Thanks for the compliments, I wish that I could say that that is my garage but it isnt, the garage belongs to Paul Jacobs, He is the one that did the restoration of my car.

Hey Allen, what is the size of your Dodge Mahal? We are looking at a piece of property just out west of Indy here, and the wife really wants it. I told her that the only way we were going to buy the 12 acres, is if I can build a 40'x60' shed on it for the car and parts. I'm thinking of going with 16' side walls, but with only 1 door on each end of the building.

I am happy with what I have. In front of my house I have a single car garage, that is my 68 Charger R/T's home. In the back of the house I have a two car garage with all the cabinets, shelving & tools that I need. Sorry for the pic it does not show the entire garage and also I know its not my 68 Charger but it is one of my other Dodge vehicles, a 1936 Dodge Brothers D2 in the middle of a resto.

I told her that the only way we were going to buy the 12 acres, is if I can build a 40'x60' shed on it for the car and parts. I'm thinking of going with 16' side walls, but with only 1 door on each end of the building.

Danny - The building is 50x60 with 14 ft walls, and has a 10x60 loft on the back side, giving about 3500 sq ft floor space after taking out 100 sq ft for the stairway.  The 14 ft walls are high enough for a lift, but makes head room minimal at the loft due to the 8 in deck thickness (my original design had a 4 in thickness).  I would reconsider the overhead doors being on the building ends if you plan to really fill the building up, it may limit access to getting a long buried project car out later.  Mark out a 40x60 space and practice getting cars in & out...  My 12x16 doors added $1000 each installed 10 years ago... a good investment IMO.

Attached is an old layout sketch of my workshop showing the general layout.  The area outlined in red has changed extensively from this layout, but I don't want to post a later layout because it includes security systems and features.

Hard to say. Before I moved into this house Ive lived in apt so I had NO garage, now I have 3 car garage. Of course it's not big enough for me now but I should be happy I've got what I have.

The cost 10 years ago was about $46,000 including options, additions, and permits.  From memory the options/additions were:

1) Increase wall height from 10 ft to 14 ft
2) Install three 16 ft wide x 12 ft tall commerial grade overhead doors in place of one 9 ft wide door
3) Engineered slab 6-7 inches in thickness with perimeter beam & 3 cross beams instead of a 4 inch slab w/perim only
4) 5/8 inch rebar in beams with 2 ft min height beams at least 6 inches into undisturbed soil at worst corner
5) Increase wall thickness of 4x4 inch columns from .081 to .125
6) Use clear-span truss design at all locations, including ends of building
7) Tie all trusses to columns with .250 thick gussets (two gusset designs used)
Custom designed 10x60 ft loft with 5 ft wide stairway for access
9) Insulation on all walls & roof
10) Plumbing provisions in the slab (seperate contractor)

The engineered slab & insulation were the most costly options at about $7500 each...

At this time I have about $60,000 invested in the workshop, final cost will probably be near $100K...

Thanks again Robin, but I seem to have a better record of taking on tasks than of finishing them... 

The workshop was financed for 7 years, with the monthly payment being less than the storage fees had been... 

I am slowly making progress on many projects, but have a loooong way to go.

I am very happy with my shop space,as a working space, and its in a great location.. got all the tools and crap and lift and everything, but what i sorely lack is an adjoining 'clean' storage area for the finished stuff. I am always welding or grinding or whatever and its a real hassle keeping the finished car/bikes whatever from getting dirty and contaminated. I resort to wrapping them in plastic sheeting most of the time, but its a hassle. What i really really need is a seperate yet adjoining sealed parking area. I have 'sterile' parking inside my buddies warehouse down the street, and plenty of space at home, but I'd like to have everything in 1 place which is problematic in downtown san francisco.

I'm happy with mine, even though its only a two car, but bigger is always better. I own a decorative concrete coating company, and we do all types of flooring for garages along with painting and installation of diamond plate cabinets. The garages always seem like another room in the house after you've installed some sort of coating on the floor in my opinion, you just never want to leave.
