'90 Mustang rebuild (UPDATE: 10/02/09)

Decided to go over to a car swap meet this weekend in Vancouver. This morning, me and my dad were on our way to the show in his '90 Mustang LX 5.0. We came off the highway and went around a sharp corner. My dad went to down shift and the car all of a sudden kicked out and spun right towards a steel lamp post. My dad tried to stop it and almost got it under control. Unfortentley not enough. The passenger's side front wheel caught the concrete base of the post and my side of the car slammed into the post and then caused us the spin 180'. The accident caved in my door skin and the front part of the quarter panel. It destroyed both wheels and tires on my side and the right side front suspension. It broke the balljoint and all of that assembly. Thank god my dad did what he did, the way we were slidding, the car was going straight towards it head-on but he managed to side swipe it. If that concrete base wouldn't of been there, we wouldn't of hit anything and just barely missed the pole. It all happened so fast, all I remember is spinning and then sitting there with my side of the car sitting low on the ground. My dad asked if I was alright and then we both got out of the car. Both of us are fine. I'm a bit sore and my dad's knee is swollen but otherwise, we're fine. The lamp post got bent and the light on top broke off. I remember the sound of the car hitting the post but I didn't see anything, I was looking the other way trying to brace for impact. I saw it coming. I still can't believe what happened. The car looks fixable. It needs a new door, a new panel on the front part of the quarter, two wheels and some new parts on the passenger's side front suspension. The impact didn't cause the air bag to go off...it wasn't hard enough of a hit. The only broken glass was on the mirror and on my side, the windshield had a small crack in the bottom.  On a brighter note, me and my dad ended up making it to the swap meet. I got a NOS Plymouth keychain, some 1973 BC licence plates and a '93 Mustang model kit (thought I'd build him a model of the car haha). So, just a note to you guys....if you see fog in the area, assume the road is wet because when you realize it, it might be too late.

All the pictures are on my dad's cell phone and I don't know when his girlfriend will get them on the computer. I had my camera on me but it didn't like getting thrown around the car. Here's a sketch of what happened. I'm trying to remember everything. It happened so fast.

Here's the car back in December. Basically, the front tire JUST BARELY caught the concrete base on the lamp post. It kinda bounced and then my door hit the post and the front part of the quarter. Then the back wheel hit it and spun us around 180' about 5-10 feet down the road. The lip and ring part of the wheels were 10 feet away!

Glad you're o.k that's the important part.  I had a 88 Mustang GT conv, my wife also took a huge spin in it, that's when I sold it.

Those cars are notorious for handling in wet/snow.

Mustang's are light in the rear end. We think when he went to downshift, the car just kicked out due to the damp road.

My brother-in-law totaled a Mustang up there in Abbotsford on some black ice years ago. It's an unpredictable area weather-wise.

Nope not yet. I don't know when he'll be able to get them on the computer. He doesn't have access to one at the moment. We're still waiting for the insurance company to call us back. They've moved the car to 3 different places this week but still haven't told us whether or not they're gonna total it. I'm gonna call my dad today and find out. I was planning on going over this weekend to the Auto show in Vancouver and get some pictures of the car too but I have the stomach flu right now.

Insurance company STILL haven't decided if they are going to cover the crash or not. On another bad note, I'm starting to feel the effects. I was sore for the first couple of days but today, I turned my head right and now it's kinked and really sore.

Uh Oh, I'm very sorry to hear that little buddy. 

Well its a good thing you have the Canadian Health care system....unfortunately, it sounds like the bad thing is ...you also have the Canadian insurance system.

I truly hope everything goes well with your Dad's claim.
