Decided to go over to a car swap meet this weekend in Vancouver. This morning, me and my dad were on our way to the show in his '90 Mustang LX 5.0. We came off the highway and went around a sharp corner. My dad went to down shift and the car all of a sudden kicked out and spun right towards a steel lamp post. My dad tried to stop it and almost got it under control. Unfortentley not enough. The passenger's side front wheel caught the concrete base of the post and my side of the car slammed into the post and then caused us the spin 180'. The accident caved in my door skin and the front part of the quarter panel. It destroyed both wheels and tires on my side and the right side front suspension. It broke the balljoint and all of that assembly. Thank god my dad did what he did, the way we were slidding, the car was going straight towards it head-on but he managed to side swipe it. If that concrete base wouldn't of been there, we wouldn't of hit anything and just barely missed the pole. It all happened so fast, all I remember is spinning and then sitting there with my side of the car sitting low on the ground. My dad asked if I was alright and then we both got out of the car. Both of us are fine. I'm a bit sore and my dad's knee is swollen but otherwise, we're fine. The lamp post got bent and the light on top broke off. I remember the sound of the car hitting the post but I didn't see anything, I was looking the other way trying to brace for impact. I saw it coming. I still can't believe what happened. The car looks fixable. It needs a new door, a new panel on the front part of the quarter, two wheels and some new parts on the passenger's side front suspension. The impact didn't cause the air bag to go off...it wasn't hard enough of a hit. The only broken glass was on the mirror and on my side, the windshield had a small crack in the bottom.  On a brighter note, me and my dad ended up making it to the swap meet. I got a NOS Plymouth keychain, some 1973 BC licence plates and a '93 Mustang model kit (thought I'd build him a model of the car haha). So, just a note to you guys....if you see fog in the area, assume the road is wet because when you realize it, it might be too late.

All the pictures are on my dad's cell phone and I don't know when his girlfriend will get them on the computer. I had my camera on me but it didn't like getting thrown around the car. Here's a sketch of what happened. I'm trying to remember everything. It happened so fast.

Here's the car back in December. Basically, the front tire JUST BARELY caught the concrete base on the lamp post. It kinda bounced and then my door hit the post and the front part of the quarter. Then the back wheel hit it and spun us around 180' about 5-10 feet down the road. The lip and ring part of the wheels were 10 feet away!

Glad you're o.k that's the important part.  I had a 88 Mustang GT conv, my wife also took a huge spin in it, that's when I sold it.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Mustang's are light in the rear end. We think when he went to downshift, the car just kicked out due to the damp road.

Any pictures of the damage yet?

Nope not yet. I don't know when he'll be able to get them on the computer. He doesn't have access to one at the moment. We're still waiting for the insurance company to call us back. They've moved the car to 3 different places this week but still haven't told us whether or not they're gonna total it. I'm gonna call my dad today and find out. I was planning on going over this weekend to the Auto show in Vancouver and get some pictures of the car too but I have the stomach flu right now. :rotz:

So my dad talked to the insurance company today. They decided to total the car. They said $8000 damage which is a major load of bullsh*t on their part. My dad's starting to price out the needed parts and it's way cheaper than what they're saying. We might end up doing a buy back thing and fixing it ourselves. We'll see.

We're really pissed off today. They dropped the car off at my dads. Get this, the passenger front fender is beat to living shit...when they took the car from the accident scene, it was MINT. The roof has a dent in it...that was also mint. Hatchback won't line up, that was fine. We don't have what the f*ck the insurance company did to it but we are not happy at all. :RantExplode:

Sorry to hear about the accident, but I am glad that you guys are alright.  I am not surprised that they totaled it due to age, as some companies just don't want to deal with older cars.  They would rather deal with newer cars, as repair shops specialize in fixing them and have easy access to new parts.  It could very well be that they intentionally damaged the car further to reach an estimate to put it into the total area just so that they could pay you off rather than to deal with fixing it.  That is where the photos right after the accident might be of use....

You have recourse if you took pictures.  Contact insurance company and go from there.  If it's the tow company that did it, you can go after them as well.  Don't touch the car until it's looked at again.

Whats are they gonna do? The car is "totaled" in their eyes & should be junked anyway....

They're gonna do nothing. They tried charging my dad a stupid $3700 penalty for "driving off the Island". The car was registered on the Island but the crash happened in Vancouver. My dad basically told them to shove the penalty up their asses. So he cancelled the claim (they can't charge him the penalty then) and the car is now at home still wrecked. We're gonna fix it ourselves. No frame damage so.

Last couple of pictures....

Here's the parts car. The insurance company said $800 for a replacement door. My dad bought this whole parts car for $300. Has a bad tranny so my dad got it cheap. The drivetrain in the 5.0 work awesome so the bad tranny in the 4 cyl parts car dosen't matter. It did have all 4 tires and brand new tires however I took 2 tires for my Duster and my grandpa got the other 2 for his car. Once we take the parts we need off of it, we're gonna sell the rest of the parts on Craigslist and etc.

Good luck with it!   Look like a nice clean parts car you have there.

Enlisting the help of body guy was a smart move - some of that work will be a lot tougher than it looks.

Magnumcharger

Looks good. It's always a better deal to buy a parts car verses paying through the nose for replacement parts from a dealership.

Question: although the fender and door will easily bolt on, are you planning on replacing the quarterpanel, or metalworking it back out?
Another question: how is the front door post (under the A pillar) for shape? With the appearance of the inner fender, the doorpost might have moved in a touch too.

From what we can tell, the door post is fine. However, that will be looked at more.

Just an update...the parts car is gone now. After all the trouble it gave us, I was glad to see it get grabbed by the loader at the scrap yard.

Not something you see everyday! ;)

Awesome Stang! I gotta admit, I wasn't a big fan of these cars. I thought they were overrated. However, I've grown to like them :yesnod:

My advice: keep the garage door closed as much as possible.....

Looks like you're living in a super nice neighborhood (pesky neighbors included).  I'll bet they just love it when that garage door opens and they see that dead iron. :D

Looking good brother.

I never thought I would say this but I really like that 5.0 in the pic. It just works for some reason.
Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Nice to see you trying to save a totaled car. It's not a Charger but still a 5.0 Mustang

It's going to the body shop soon! We finally got the garage cleaned out so we can walk around the Charger and Mustang now. I'm gonna swap doors pretty soon, take the old one off and put the replacement one. Same goes for the fender once we bang the inner fender back into it's rough place. We're also gonna tear the interior out and dye everything black. We'll be ordering a new quarter for it. That costs about $150.00. My dad decided this colour scheme but he wants about a 2" cowl hood and instead of the bottom stripes saying "GT500"....he wants them to say "5.0L". I'm pretty sure he still wants Weld Draglites.
