Do you ever really feel ripped off?

I just placed a $380 order with Year One.  With their 15% off "spring sale" discount the prices were only 5% above the catalog prices.  Then they charged $112 shipping and handling since one of the boxes was oversize.  (tailpipes) They wouldn't even put it all in the same box.  Don't see using them again.

Sorry for the rant but they are no longer worth the convenience to me after this one.  I'll work a little harder on finding the vendors.

It's become a pretty common lament about Year One anymore.  It's too bad, they're going to cost themselves a lot of business.

I had the same problem with the Paddock.  Got a pressure brake bleeder kit from them for working on my cars.  Was something like a total order of $280 and they socked me something like $50 for shipping an 8 lb box.  I checked on two different sites, fed ex and ups and the price ranged from $12-16 for the same zip codes and weight that the sticker said that they sent.  Called them up  :RantExplode: and they said they dont charge the exact amount of shipping but a percent of what your total order price is.  Load of BS to me but that was the last time that I ever ordered from them and have been boycotting them ever since.

terrible one

There was a thread not too long ago where someone noted that Year One and others get a volume discount on shipping, so they seemingly use the biggest boxes and as many boxes as they can! The more they screw you on the shipping, the more they get back! :scratchchin:

My only experience with Year One was positive. I bought $1,100 worth of stuff from them and it cost $38 in shipping but it was all light; mostly wiring harnesses.

You are definitely going to pay through the nose on anything heavy or oversized from those types of businesses. I always try to find local dealers for the big, heavy parts because it costs way too much to get it here through UPS. One way to avoid some of those high shipping charges is to get hooked up with a local business owner who routinely buys their stuff and order your parts through them to get in on bulk shipping discounts.

I've started a thread a while back about Year one and how they rip you off on shipping. Too bad search engine doesn't work well, it's hard to find that particular thread "year one rant"
Sorry that you got ripped off. I try to deal with other companies ie Dante's.

This is not a new situation for sure.  They get ya when it comes to shipping for sure!!   :RantExplode:

I was just putting together an order and the total for the parts as listed in their catalog (just received two weeks ago) was around $1,000.  When I put the same order in online it was over $1,400 for the exact same parts.  I think what they are doing is criminal.

Did you know:

Year One has distributors around the continent?

Most of the items available at YO are available elsewhere?

No offense intended but a bit of time shopping around will lead you to find other vendors that have the same items, sometimes they are slightly more money but most of the time they are less.

I have no problem with YO and have used them many times.  When I am shopping for parts, I'll start with a list of items, ask them what is in stock, the current price and what the shipping charges will be to my door.  I'll then calculate the customs and duties (crossing the border into Canada) and make my decision from there.  I'll usually get some sort of quote or reference number and a name and extension number of who I spoke with and call the same person back should I decide to go with the YO purchase.

The search engine on this site works fine, as long as one know how to use it!

YO just makes it easier to find the stuff. You know, one-stop shopping and all...

I agree.  That is why when I am in need a lot of items and want to purchase them at once, it may cost more to get them but I consider those extra dollars as convenience fees!

ITSA426

That was my feeling.  I've dealt with year one for more than ten years, but their convenience fees are no longer worth the convenience.  They once shipped a decal to me in a small box.  Lately we've waited until we had a substantial order to place to take advantage of the $500 or $1000 discounts but their prices just aren't worth it anymore.

Year One buys a $250 item from a distributor, prices it at $500, knocks it down to "only" $400 with some complicated & contradictory discount structures . . . and eventually charges you $600 by the time it gets to your door.

GO SELL CRAZY SOMEWHERE ELSE WE ARE ALL STOCKED UP HERE

I have a friend that works for UPS and this is his take. A company that ships high volume pays very little on their shipping. It is another way for them to make money. The percentage they talk about is usually billed as shipping and handling. Seems a bit ridiculous. I know you needed the parts, but next time you may tell them to cancel the order, and see if they budge at all on the shipping cost. Just my  :Twocents:
I'd rather die than go to heaven.

There is a similar response to yearone over at mopartsdotcom.  http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=4344038&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1

Someone from yearone is responding to members complaints.. The thread was originally a posting for yearone discounts for moparts members.  The thread has taken a life of its own.

I have purchased a few things from yearone years ago but now I can't justify the prices.  I found another company that makes the engine wiring harnesses  but is higher in price than yearone.  $175 for company x and $125 for yearone.  The dash wiring harness is high but you can get the price down 20% with mopart15 member discount.  They want a lot of money for some special wire connectors.

the Dash harness is the only harness that YO "makes" - all the other harnesses can be purchased through Evan's Wiring for around the same price but i'd rather he get my money than Year One.

Then there's Summit Racing Equipment that charges a flat fee of $11.95 for U.S. orders. So as long as you place a big enough order you take advantage of there volume discount that they pass on. As stated, it's convenient to shop at Year One because they have just about everything when it comes to restoration parts. Theres vender's out there like Dante's and Adeals that will have cheaper price's but they don't have the selection.
Still looking for 15x7 Appliance slotted mags.....

bull

FWIW, Year One doesn't seem to mind if the oversized boxes are mailed on their dime or yours. When I placed my big order with them there were six items on backorder that came a couple weeks later and there was more wasted space in that box than the first one they sent.

I think it's just a time issue as well as a money-maker. It seems like they just quickly grab the box that the largest item fits into and then they fill the rest with smaller parts and paper.

They don't "make" the dash harness either - it's made by M&H but YO has an exclusive sellers agreement.
