New Wheels for a '71

Hey all,

Putting some new rims on the 71. Wondering about backspacing/size recommendations. Was thinking about going the same size all around, and wondering what size I can get away with front/back.

Rims of choice are Torq Thrust Originals.

These are 15 x 7's. The backspacing is 3 1/2. That was the standard backspacing that came with them. I have 255/60/15's on the back and 225/60/15's on the front. You can get them from a variety of places, just shop for the best price.

On a side note and not to steal this thread- I posted a topic in Paint and Body about painting my insets black, if anybody can help me out.

This is my first post here. 

Question:

Did you have to modify anything?  Also I know the '73 has some suspension differences from the '71 - '72.  Just curious if anyone knows if these would work for sure on a '73 also, they sound in line with the look I'd want.  I'm also interested if anyone has used 4" backspace on x7s or 4 1/2" backspace on x8s.  That seems to be the specs on the reproduction Chrysler Rallyes.   Also I am curious does anyone know a reason why with 255s in front not to use a x8?  I see x7s used more often up front and was wondering why.  Any info / opinions are appreciated.

I didn't change anything. I would go less backspacing on the front - if I turn the wheel 101% in either direction it can rub. Under normal conditions I don't have any problems whatsoever. I got the Magnums from Jeg's.

I just remembered that I looked at a 71 R/T last year in Texas. The guy had the same size tire all the way around. It looked pretty good. I can't remember the rim size, 15 I think, but the tire size was 255 or 275 - they were big! I asked him if the fronts rubbed or not and he replied that they didn't. But it looked to me like they had.

This probably doesn't help you out much but it was a mean looking stance. I lost all the pics in a computer crash.

i have 15x7s all the way around,245/60r15s.the rear tires look kind of small,but they fit great and dont rub ever.the back space is 4 1/4 i believe,but i put them on 3 years ago,and dont remember!! i want to replace them with cragar s/s,and will probably sell these,if any one knows any one who wants em

FWIW, 71...I have 15x8 255/60's all around...I think the bs is 4.5".  I used to have 275/60-15s on the back but there was occasional rubbing.  I would do 3.5" bs if I were going to put 275's back on (or even 295's, but you'd have to do some good measuring to avoid rubbing).

I want to go with 295 or 315 on a 15 on the rear on a 10"wide rim. What does the back spacing need to be?

Does everyone here have 5 lug bolt patern? What's the measuement for that?

As far I know max backspacing without any problems is 4"

It's the bolt circle diameter.

If you just want to bolt them on with no problems you can use 15" x 8" wheels with a 4" backspace all around. I had those on my 73 before with 235/60's. Plenty of room for a little bit more tire even.

If you want to put a 275 or a 295 tire on the rear you will need more backspace on the wheel to clear the fender lip. A 15" x 8" wheel with 4 1/2" back space will work on the rear with a 275 or even a 295, but not the front, the front wheel will rub on the upper control arm with 4 1/2" of backspace.

If you want a 10" wheel on the rear you will need about 5 1/2" of backspace on the wheel to clear the fender lip. You will need to move the springs in with offset shackles and still have to clearance the spring a bit in the front. If you go with 5" backspace on a 10" wheel the rear will have to stay up pretty high to keep the fender lip off the tire.

I have 15"x10" with 5 1/2" backspace on the rears now. It looks awesome. But I had to do the aforementioned work to the springs.

Thanks guys. I'm running a 275 now on a 15x8. No clearance issues. Just too much wheel spin. I'l like to run a 315 or atleast a 295. Will I need to go to 10 inch for that?

A 295 will fit on a 8". I have seen it many times. The only thing about putting a 295 on an 8" is the tire will bulge out a bit.

Summit sells some US wheel series 97, 15x10's that say 4 inch back spacing. If my car will take 4inch bs, wont these fit?
