transmission not shifting right

i have a 68 dodge charger 318, 904 transmission i think, well when i put it in drive and start to take of in first and then there is a 2 second delay where it is in neutral before it goes into second, before there was no delay. also if i was to drop it from drive to 2 there is the same pause. and the pause is always about 2 seconds no matter how fast im goin.

does it have fluid in it ?

does it smell burnt ?

2nd gear is a function of the kickdown band, check the band adjustment.

has fluid at the correct level, i found out that my linkage of my kickdown band is extremely lose, if it was running like that for so long will it ruin my transmission

It does accelerate wear no question about that.  I would suggest follow Mr. Kunkels advice first, you may be lucky.
